Puegnago Del Garda: Hills, Small Lakes and History
Accommodation in Puegnago Del Garda
Landscape in the morainic hills
The municipality of Puegnago del Garda is located in the morainic hills of Valtenesi. Its elevated position offers impressive views of Lake Garda and Monte Baldo. Hills, woods, fields and vineyards surround Puegnago sul Garda; as a result, the area is characterised by abundant greenery and open exposure to the sun. Views of the lake and Monte Baldo describe the panorama from the elevated location, while the woods, fields and vineyards frame the area around the town. These are two different aspects of the same landscape to consider when choosing your destination.
Laghetti di Sovenigo: flowering season and sport fishing
The Laghetti di Sovenigo are three small, striking bodies of water above Puegnago sul Garda and near the border with the municipality of Gavardo. They lie among reeds and are of ancient morainic origin. Lotus flowers and water lilies bloom there in July and August. If you are travelling specifically to see them in bloom, you can plan your dates around these two months. The Laghetti are also known for sport fishing for carp and pike. The lakes therefore offer two different points of interest for planning your trip: seasonal flowering and an interest in sport fishing. If fishing is part of your stay, check in advance whether it is possible during your visit and under what conditions.
Prehistoric traces and Castello di Puegnago
Remains of several prehistoric pile-dwelling settlements have been found at the Laghetti di Sovenigo. In addition to their landscape character, the lakes therefore also have an archaeological connection to prehistory. Castello di Puegnago represents a different architectural history: it is the ruin of an ancient fortification with an irregular ground plan. The tower of the complex was converted into a bell tower. The irregular ground plan describes the shape of the structure, while the tower’s conversion points to a change in use. The prehistoric settlement traces and the ancient fortification thus represent different historical periods.
Cycling route, getting there and Puegnago Fiera
The Puegnago del Garda–Polpenazze del Garda route connects to the Salò–Lonato provincial cycle path after 1.2 km. When planning, it is useful to distinguish between the two names: Puegnago–Polpenazze refers to the route, while Salò–Lonato is the provincial cycle path it connects to. The connection is therefore a specific point where the routes meet.
There is parking near the route’s starting point. Puegnago del Garda is also accessible by bus. These details relate to different aspects of planning: parking is available near the start of the cycling route, while bus access refers to the town. If you are travelling by bus, check the timetable for your travel date; if you are starting the route, you can use the starting point as a reference when looking for parking.
The municipality organises Puegnago Fiera, an annual regional event. It is a recurring occasion around which to plan your travel dates.
