Leno: Abbey History, Gardens and Culture
Accommodation in Leno
Leno can be explored through several distinct areas of interest: the history of the abbey, historic architecture, cultural events and green spaces. If you are looking for hotels in Leno, it may help to first decide which themes you want to shape your stay. Villa Badia, the Chiesa Ss. Nazaro e Celso, the Teatro Civico and the annual Fiera di San Benedetto each offer a different focus. This lets you tailor your search to your plans.
Villa Badia and the History of the Monastery
Villa Badia is a historic residence built on the remains of the Abbey of Leno. It stands in a large park garden in the historic town centre. Archaeological investigations have confirmed that the villa and park lie on the footprint of the medieval monastic complex. The present-day Giardino dei Semplici at Villa Badia follows the layout of the ancient Hortus simplicium of the monastery of San Benedetto ad Leones in Leno. The medieval monastery layout and the design of today’s garden thus come together as a subject of cultural history.
Church Architecture and Earlier Finds
The present-day Chiesa Ss. Nazaro e Celso dates from the transition between the Early Middle Ages and the Romanesque period. Much of its original herringbone-pattern masonry is preserved on the exterior. The pattern describes the visible arrangement of the masonry and provides a specific architectural detail alongside the church’s historical dating. Excavations at the church also uncovered the remains of a large Roman rural villa dating from the 1st to the 4th century AD. The church and villa remains thus represent two distinct historical layers. The church is located in the hamlet of Pluda, amid the greenery of the plain, on Provincial Road 68 between Leno and Calvisano.
Theatre, Film and the Fiera di San Benedetto
The Teatro Civico is located in the historic centre of Leno and hosts theatre performances as well as film screenings. It complements the town’s architectural history with an offering for visitors interested in theatre and cinema. If a particular performance is important to your travel plans, the programme is the relevant reference.
The Fiera di San Benedetto takes place every year on 11 July, at the same time as the feast of Saint Benedict. It is a trade fair featuring natural products, km0 products, as well as handcrafted and handmade goods. The products on offer may vary from one edition to the next. If you want to plan your stay around the festival, check the programme for that year.
Green Space in Parco Comunale Gino Vaia
Parco Comunale Gino Vaia has walking paths and a children’s playground. These features offer a different focus from the history of the monastery and the historic architecture: here, the emphasis is on green space, with paths and a play area. The park can therefore be included as a separate point of interest in your daily plans.
The Fiera provides a clear date to consider when choosing your travel dates: it takes place annually on 11 July. Villa Badia and the church, on the other hand, are cultural and historical attractions, while the Fiera is tied to a specific date. If you would like to plan around a particular theatre performance or film screening, consult the programme.
