Pisogne: Frescoes, art by the water and paths along the lake
Accommodation in Pisogne
Pisogne on Lake Iseo can be explored through several specific highlights: Romanino’s frescoes, art by the water, historic churches, and paths along the lake and in the surrounding area. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in Pisogne, this variety can help you plan: consider whether your trip will focus more on art and history, a path along the lake, or a hiking route.
Art and history in Pisogne
The Chiesa di Santa Maria della Neve was built in the 15th century on the northern edge of Pisogne. Girolamo Romani, known as Romanino, frescoed its walls, chancel arch and rear façade between 1532 and 1534. The fresco cycle culminates in the Crucifixion on the rear façade—a specific landmark if you’re studying the composition of the work.
The Pieve di Santa Maria in Silvis offers another art-historical detail: its portal sculpture, dated 1485, is signed by Damiano da Milano. Visitors can descend below the church floor and visit some of the rooms there. It’s advisable to contact the church in advance to arrange access.
Lakeside, green spaces and contemporary art
Parco Comunale covers 16,000 square metres and features a wide variety of conifer trees, including some rare species. Mirad’Or offers a different focus: this museum on the water is a contemporary exhibition space in the form of a modern stilt-house structure. It hosts exhibitions and contemporary art projects in dialogue with the lake, its history and the community.
For a route directly along the shore, Lungolago Tempini is a lakeside promenade more than one kilometre long, designed entirely for pedestrians and cyclists. By contrast, the Toline–Vello cycle and pedestrian path runs beside the water between Toline, a district of Pisogne, and Vello in Marone. The route can be used on foot or by bicycle and includes tunnels and rest areas.
Routes with different highlights
The first section of the Antica Strada Valeriana runs from the centre of Pisogne through chestnut woods. It forms part of a 25-kilometre route, mostly offering scenic views, along the eastern shore of the lake. The Antica Strada Valeriana is also described as a pilgrimage and devotional route, shaped by churches, sanctuaries, hermitages and chapels. It therefore combines a specific route description with the landscape’s religious character.
In Val Palot, a circular route to Rifugio Medelet starts in the heart of the valley. The route follows the Pizzacane stream to Roccolo Laini, then continues along trail 201 to the refuge. For orientation, you can distinguish the routes by their known features: the lakeside promenade, which is more than one kilometre long; the 25-kilometre Valeriana route; and the circular route in Val Palot with its stated destination.
Another circular route leads from Toline, a district of Pisogne, to the summit of Corna Trentapassi. A short via ferrata runs along the summit ridge. It is not particularly difficult technically, but requires suitable equipment and is recommended for experienced hikers. This recommendation applies to the via ferrata on the summit ridge, not to the entire circular route.
