Sant'Agata Feltria: Fortress, Museums and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Sant'Agata Feltria
Discover Sant'Agata Feltria from different perspectives: the Rocca Fregoso and several museums explore cultural and historical themes, while signposted trails lead through the countryside. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on exhibitions and architectural history, go for a hike or attend a seasonal event.
The fortress and fairy-tale themes
The Rocca Fregoso stands on Sasso del Lupo, also known as Pietra Anellaria. From this natural escarpment, it overlooks the Savio valley below. The fortress houses the permanent Rocca delle Fiabe museum, which opened on 20 September 2014. It explores fairy-tale themes through books, excerpts and other texts, as well as themed animations and multimedia materials. The exhibition therefore brings together a range of formats, from texts to multimedia elements.
Archaeology, the monastery and rural culture
The Museo Archeologico traces settlement and transport routes in the Sant'Agata Feltria area from prehistory and early history through Roman times to the Middle Ages. Settlement and routes are two themes that can be followed across several eras. Workshops in experimental archaeology are offered for schoolchildren, students and adults; advance booking is required.
The Monastero di Santa Maria Maddalena includes a Romanesque church dedicated to Santa Maria Maddalena, dating from the 12th to 13th century. Another cultural stop is the complex comprising the Church of the Beata Vergine delle Grazie and the Monastery of San Girolamo. The former monastery houses the Museo delle Arti Rurali; the historic complex dates from the mid-16th century. The museum documents peasant life and the associated arts and crafts. Its focus on rural life and craftsmanship sets it apart from the archaeological exhibition, which explores settlement and transport routes across different eras.
Theatre, art and trails
The Teatro Angelo Mariani is a historic theatre in Italy built entirely of wood. Guided tours are available there for groups and school classes by prior reservation. Confirm the booking details before your trip.
There are also several options for hiking: ten hiking trails through the woods are signposted in Sant'Agata Feltria. The “Percorso Bioitaly” is an easy, educational nature trail suitable for everyone. Walking it at an average pace takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. One stage of the Cammino di San Vicinio leads from Sant'Agata Feltria to Montetiffi.
The “Il giro delle fontane” walking route includes a mosaic fountain artwork by Ravenna-born artist Marco Bravura. It consists of more than 300,000 gold-coloured, multicoloured mosaic tiles. In addition, more than 3,000 hectares of woodland in Sant'Agata Feltria provide a habitat for numerous species of wildlife.
Seasonal events and cuisine
The national “Il Paese del Natale” fair takes place in December on the holidays leading up to Christmas. Its programme includes the “I Piatti dell’Avvento” food trail, featuring dishes prepared according to the customs and traditions of the Christmas season in Sant'Agata Feltria. If you are planning your trip around this event, check the exact dates in advance.
The truffle fair programme includes a competition for truffle-hunting dogs. During the fair, white truffles from the local woods are used to prepare high-quality gourmet dishes. The fair therefore offers its own culinary highlight, while “I Piatti dell’Avvento” is specifically associated with Christmas traditions.
Travel planning tips
Sant'Agata Feltria also has a motorhome parking area. It is about 200 metres from Piazza Garibaldi and has space for up to 50 motorhomes. Check availability during major fairs. Together with the booking advice for workshops and theatre tours, these are useful points to consider when coordinating your visits and travel dates with the activities on offer.
