Castelleale is a small rural settlement of medieval origin with significant Gothic architectural remains. At its centre is the fortified Malatesta estate, founded by Bishop Leale Malatesta in 1388. Together with Agello, Castelleale is considered one of the best-preserved examples of a fortified Malatesta estate, or “tumba,” in the Rimini area. Here, the term “tumba” refers to a fortified estate. The residence, courtyard, and defensive structures give the place a clearly defined historical character.

Courtyard and fortifications

At the beginning of the 15th century, the fortified settlement was arranged around a square courtyard. A high, crenellated wall, a massive tower, and a moat surrounded the complex. The courtyard structured the settlement; the wall, tower, and moat formed its defences. Historically, the entrance was on the south side and led over a drawbridge to the gates. The inner layout and outer defensive structures are thus among the fortified estate’s key historical features.

Gates and architectural details

The gates differ both in shape and in their former function: the carriage gate had a pointed arch, while the smaller pedestrian gate had a trefoil arch. The sides of a pointed arch converge at a point at the top; a trefoil arch is characterised by three rounded lobes. These forms can therefore be compared directly. According to the municipal administration, Castelleale’s 15th-century gates have been preserved and restored.

A 15th-century dedication plaque made of Istrian stone is visible on Bishop Leale’s residence. It adds a different architectural detail to the archways: here, the focus is on the material, date, and dedication rather than the shape of an opening.

Residence, church, and local history

Leale Malatesta had his residence built in Castelleale. He dictated his last will there and died there in 1400. The parish church is attached to the fortification walls and was restored at the beginning of the 17th century. 14th-century walls and arches can be seen on the exterior, along with old windows with stone surrounds. The building’s history thus spans several centuries, bringing the fortifications, residence, and church together in a single townscape.

Hilltop setting and how to get there

Castelleale is situated on a hill. Contemporary chronicles described it as being blessed with good fields and vineyards—a historical account of the landscape that adds to the rural character attributed to the place in historical records.

A route description reprinted in 2017 recounted the journey from Croce di Montecolombo along a secondary road through the valley of the Rio di Mordano and over Ponte Scaricalasino to Castelleale. If you are considering this route, check current road conditions before setting out. The town’s history and architectural details shape Castelleale’s historic character.
