San Clemente brings together local history, wine and cycling. In the historic centre, walls and bastions still define the town’s outline and remain clearly visible. The defensive walls are a 14th-century urban fortification on Via Castello. Together with the historic gateway, which recalls when the village was fully fortified, they give local history a tangible architectural focal point.

Fortifications and Art History

Part of the Rocchetta has been preserved, including the small pentagonal towers commissioned by Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta. The recesses for the beams of the former drawbridge are clearly visible on the gate tower. These details illustrate different aspects of the fortifications: the shape of the towers and the construction associated with the former drawbridge.

The parish church preserves another cultural testimony inside: a depiction of the Holy Family by Giovan Battista Costa, an artist from Rimini. Thus, alongside the defensive architecture is a work of painting whose subject and artist are both connected with San Clemente.

Historical Traces Around San Clemente

By 1630, Cella Tonda already largely resembled its present-day form. It may have served as a hospice on the main road to Coriano. This possible former function gives the building a historical connection different from that of the fortifications, without presenting this interpretation as certain.

Castelleale lies a few kilometres from San Clemente. In the Rimini area, it is one of the few surviving examples of a building that served both as a large farmstead and a fortified villa. The distance places Castelleale in a distinct geographical relationship to San Clemente; its description as a farmstead and fortified villa highlights its dual historical function.

The dates also refer to different aspects: the town walls date from the 14th century, while Cella Tonda already largely resembled its present-day form in 1630. These points in time help place the different architectural features in context without combining them into a single building history.

Wine Culture and Events

In San Clemente, Sangiovese has long been regarded as one of the finest wines of Romagna. The “Note di Vino” event series pairs regional wines with typical dishes from local tradition. The first event in the series took place in 2001. If you would like to include Note di Vino in your travel plans, check the current dates and programme for the relevant edition in advance.

Cycling Routes Between the Sea and the Hills

The San Clemente area offers cycling routes between the sea and the hills. Cycling is another possible focus for a trip, complementing the area’s cultural and culinary attractions. When looking for a hotel in San Clemente, you can choose the location based on whether historic buildings, wine culture or cycling routes are the main focus of your stay.
