Montefiore Conca combines a townscape shaped by its medieval past with sweeping views, church art and trails through the surrounding cultural landscape. When choosing a hotel, consider whether you are most interested in the historic Borgo, religious artworks, recurring festivals or outdoor activities.

Borgo, Fortress and Views

The Borgo di Montefiore Conca sits atop one of the highest hills in the Valconca and offers sweeping views of the coast and lower valley. The Rocca di Montefiore Conca also stands on a promontory. On clear days, the view from there stretches along the coast from Fano to Ravenna. These two descriptions of the views make the town’s elevated position an important part of its character.

The town centre retains its medieval layout: houses cluster around the castle, while walls and old towers enclose the centre in a semicircle. This gives the Borgo a clear architectural unity. During a stay, both the fortified layout and the elevated position in the Valconca take centre stage—two distinct aspects that can be appreciated through the views of the surrounding area and the historic buildings.

Churches and Artworks

The parish church of San Paolo dates back to the 12th century. Its elegant white stone portal dates to the late 13th century. The high altar features a panel painting of the Madonna della Misericordia and Saints, recently attributed to Bernardino Dolci. The building’s history and the panel painting offer distinct points of interest: the portal speaks to the architecture, while the altarpiece reflects religious art.

The Chiesa dell’Ospedale della Misericordia was built between 1470 and 1474 as part of a small hospice for pilgrims. It also preserves a recently restored fresco cycle attributed to Bernardino Dolci or his workshop. At the parish church, the portal and altarpiece are key points of interest; at the Chiesa dell’Ospedale, the history of the pilgrims’ hospice and the wall paintings are additional highlights.

The Santuario della Madonna di Bonora also has a specific historical connection. In his will of 1409, the hermit Ondidei di Bonora bequeathed his property and the cell containing the image of the Madonna del Latte to the Franciscan Tertiaries. The will links the hermit’s name, the cell and the image of the Virgin in a story dating back to the early 15th century.

Festivals and Recurring Events

The traditions of Montefiore Conca include a dramatic Good Friday procession that has been held for centuries. Its characters include hooded members of the confraternities, the cross-bearing Cyrenian, Roman soldiers and angels. Rocca di Luna takes place at a different time each year: this three-day festival is held during the week of the July full moon and features theatre, music, poetry, art and entertainment.

October also brings recurring festival days. A chestnut festival is held every Sunday of the month. The programme includes chestnuts prepared in various ways, a food market, music, dances, performances and wine. The events mentioned take place at different times of year and for different occasions: Good Friday, the week of the July full moon and the Sundays in October each offer a distinct cultural setting for planning a trip.

Walking and Mountain Biking Trails

A short walking trail runs along the walls of the Borgo. Near Porta Nova, the path climbs up to the park, which can also be reached from below the Rocca. To reach Big Bench #310, follow an approximately 700-metre footpath from Via Forca via CAI 043 or CAI 043A. From the bench, there are views of the Valconca and the Riviera Romagnola.

In addition, numerous trails lead from Montefiore Conca through the surrounding cultural landscape, which includes both wild and cultivated areas. They are suitable for walking and mountain biking. The information about Big Bench gives an approximate distance and two marked trail designations; the other paths offer a wider choice of excursions through the landscape. Depending on your interests, you can choose between a walk along the Borgo, the trail to the bench, and other walking or mountain biking trails.

Olive Oil and Regional Cuisine

Montefiore Conca is known for its olive oil production. The oil is considered robust and full-flavoured. Along with the chestnut festival, it is one of the town’s culinary highlights: olive oil production is a year-round feature, while the chestnut festival takes place on Sundays in October. This distinction may be useful if you would like to plan your stay around a particular product or a recurring event.
