Novafeltria: Mining History, Theatre and Landscape
Accommodation in Novafeltria
Novafeltria can be explored through clearly distinct themes: sulphur mining, weaving and theatre history, Romanesque and Liberty buildings, outdoor activities, and recurring festivals. If you are looking for a hotel in Novafeltria, this selection can help you decide what to focus on during your stay. Would you like to explore industrial history, plan your trip around a festival, or combine culture and landscape? The places and events offer different starting points for doing so.
Sulphur Mining and Weaving
The Museo Minerario di Perticara documents sulphur extraction at the Perticara mine. Sulphur – Museo Storico Minerario di Perticara opened in 1970 and is one of Italy’s first major examples of industrial archaeology. Industrial archaeology focuses on the evidence of industrial work and technology; in Perticara, sulphur extraction is the specific point of reference.
The weaving museum is located in the basement of Palazzo Cappelli. It features a historical reconstruction of weaving, with looms from prehistoric and ancient periods, and has three working square looms dating from the second millennium AD. The span from prehistoric and ancient references to looms from the second millennium AD gives the weaving museum its own focus alongside mining.
Liberty Architecture and Romanesque Origins
Palazzo Segni, a Liberty-style building with a portico, is located in the historic centre. The Teatro Sociale di Novafeltria is also in the Liberty style. It opened in 1925 with Puccini’s opera La Bohème; its construction was made possible by contributions from 72 local families. The two buildings share the same style, but their histories have different distinguishing features: Palazzo Segni has its portico, while the theatre is also notable for its opening and the families’ contributions.
Two church sites have Romanesque connections: the Oratorio di Santa Marina is a Romanesque building dating to 1191, while the Pieve di San Pietro in Culto has Romanesque origins. For Santa Marina, the construction is dated to a specific year; for San Pietro in Culto, the reference to its origins describes an era rather than a single date. The former Polverificio Bonifazi in Novafeltria is preserved as a museum by the municipality, adding another former industrial enterprise to the area’s industrial history.
Outdoor Activities and Art
The Skypark adventure park in Perticara offers treetop courses with varying levels of difficulty. The different courses give you specific options within the available activities; operating details may change, so check the operator’s latest information before your visit. Perticara also offers climbing on natural rock faces. Treetop courses and rock climbing are two different outdoor activities that you can include in your plans, depending on your interests.
Near the centre, a large installation featuring red eyeglass lenses marks the entrance to Parco Ivan Graziani. As a work of public art, it combines a striking motif with a specific connection to the park.
Festivals and Landscape
Two recurring annual festivals provide seasonal points of reference for planning your trip. The Sagra del Cascione e delle Erbe Spontanee takes place on the first weekend of June in Novafeltria’s historic centre. The Sagra della Vendemmia e dei frutti d'autunno is held annually on the second Sunday in October, also in the historic centre. The dates differ both by month and by calendar type: a weekend in June versus a Sunday in October.
Sartiano offers a viewpoint overlooking the Marecchia Valley. For your trip planning, this landscape view complements architecture, museums and events with a perspective of its own.
