Bellaria-Igea Marina: Cultural Sites, Lake and Paths Along the Uso
Accommodation in Bellaria-Igea Marina
These places offer different points of interest: the Torre Saracena recalls a historic coastal fortification, while the Collezione Radio d'Epoca focuses on the history of radio. Parco del Gelso and the Sentieri per l'Uso complement these cultural themes with different landscape settings.
Cultural History and Collections
The Torre Saracena was built in 1673 by the Apostolic Chamber as part of a plan to fortify the coast. Its upper floors house a malacological collection featuring shells, molluscs, skeletons of marine organisms, madreporites, echinoderms, crustaceans and turtle shells. Here, the history of coastal fortifications meets a collection of marine natural forms.
La Casa Rossa offers a different cultural perspective. The villa was acquired in 1909; Alfredo Panzini spent a great deal of time there with his family, mainly in summer. The house also became a meeting place for friends and writers. Unlike the Torre, the focus here is on Panzini's time at the villa and its literary circle.
The Collezione Radio d'Epoca presents the history of radio through 140 radio sets dating from 1930 to 1935. It is located in the rooms of Bellaria railway station and is on the ground floor, with no architectural barriers. This precise date range gives the collection a clear focus within the history of radio. If you are planning a visit, check the current opening hours in advance.
The three cultural sites have clearly distinct themes: the Torre brings together coastal fortifications and marine life, Casa Rossa focuses on Panzini's literary circle, and the Collezione Radio on the history of technology.
The Lake and River as Landscape Highlights
Parco del Gelso extends around the lake of the same name and reaches south to the centre of Igea Marina. This sets it apart from the Sentieri per l'Uso: the lake is the park's focal point, while the Uso river corridor is the setting for the cycling and walking route. The park also has an outdoor fitness area; check in advance whether it is currently available for use.
The Sentieri per l'Uso form a cycling and walking route about six kilometres long through the Uso river corridor in the municipalities of Bellaria Igea Marina and San Mauro Pascoli. The route follows the river, sometimes along the right bank and sometimes along the left, on unpaved paths and marked trails. The section in Bellaria begins on Via Ravenna, where it meets the Uso on the right bank. There are nine equipped rest stops along the entire cycling and walking route, with benches, picnic tables, play facilities and information boards. The approximate length, riverside route and variety of path types give you practical points of reference for planning your day.
