Montescudo: Theater, History and Gnocchi Festival
Accommodation in Montescudo
Montescudo combines historic buildings and a theatrical tradition with festival cuisine and views of the coast. Churches, towers and walls in the town center tell of different eras; further afield, there are museums and a protected landscape. A long-standing potato festival and a challenging cycling tour are also among the features that make the town worth considering when planning your trip.
Theater, Churches and History
The Teatro Francesco Rosaspina dates back to 1780. Its layout follows the horseshoe-shaped design of an Italian theater. Historically, its program focused on dialect comedies. If you plan to attend a performance, check the current schedule.
The history of the Chiesa dei Santi Biagio e Simeone also goes back a long way: a church dedicated to Saint Simeone stood on this site before the year 1000. During the Malatesta rule, a second church dedicated to Saint Biagio was built inside Montescudo Castle. In a bull dated March 17, 1319, Pope John XXII granted the Franciscans the church of San Simeone in Montescudo and allowed them to dedicate it to Saint Francis.
The Torre Civica dates back to the 14th century. Beside the main square is an icehouse from the Malatesta era. Another find from the town’s history came to light in 1954 during restoration work on the walls: 22 medals depicting Sigismondo and the Tempio Malatestiano were discovered in a terracotta vase in the eastern section, at the central bastion.
Below the historic center is an 18th-century washhouse. Its rare “a trabocchi” design can be recognized by its basins set at progressively lower levels. The Giardino del bastione offers a different highlight: this garden on the bastion provides sweeping views of the coast.
Museums and Landscape in the Wider Municipality
In the wider municipality of Montescudo-Monte Colombo, the Museo della Linea Gotica Orientale displays 235 black-and-white photographs, along with about 150 war relics. The collection includes gas masks, helmets, casings, cartridges, shrapnel, hand grenades, and parts of mines and Allied and German equipment.
The Museo Etnografico di Valliano is housed in the parish office of the Santuario di Valliano. It documents agricultural production and small-scale crafts in the rural area around Rimini. The museum also runs “Il Calesse,” a restoration workshop that includes training elements.
The municipality’s landscape includes the Riserva regionale generale Bosco di Albereto e Grotta di Pasqua. This regional nature reserve protects the Grotta di Pasqua karst complex, the Gessi di Montescudo and the Bosco di Albereto. It covers about 319 hectares.
Gnocchi, Potatoes and the Festival
The Sagra della Patata e Festa degli Gnocchi has been held for more than 40 years, after the harvest, on the second weekend in August. Exact dates and the program may vary from year to year. The festival centers on handmade gnocchi prepared according to a traditional recipe. Other potato specialties include oven-baked stockfish with potatoes, piadina, fried bomboloni, potato dessert and potato ice cream; the specific offerings may change from one edition to the next.
At the Sagra market, Patata di Montescudo potatoes are sold directly by the growers. Market offerings may also vary from one edition to the next. For planning purposes, check both the festival dates and the current program.
A Challenging Cycling Tour
An older route description lists the challenging Climbers’ Tour No. 1: the loop runs from Riccione through Montescudo, Montegrimano and Monte Altavelio, then back to Riccione. The stated distance is 100 kilometers, with 1,750 meters of elevation gain. At kilometer 20, the tour passes through Montescudo; the route then describes a three-kilometer descent toward Santa Maria del Piano. Check current signage and conditions before setting out.
