Vergiano offers travellers interested in exploring cultural history and the landscape a variety of points of interest. These include the parish church of Santa Maria della Neve and the Parco degli Artisti in the village, as well as historic and nature trails in the area of Covignano, Spadarolo and Vergiano. Together with the agriculturally shaped hilly landscape and seasonal local cuisine, the destination encompasses religious art as well as nature and agriculture.
Culture and History
One cultural landmark is the Parco degli Artisti on the banks of the Marecchia River. It was inaugurated in Vergiano di Rimini on 5 June 2021 as a cultural and social meeting place. This adds a contemporary touch to the village's cultural profile.
The parish church of Santa Maria della Neve was consecrated on 28 October 1523. The artworks in the church include a painting of the Nativity from 1600; its artist is unknown. The crucifix of Santa Maria della Neve also has its own history: an unknown artist made it from olive wood in the 16th century, using wood donated by the Vorabbi family.
To this day, men from the parish carry the crucifix in processions in May and October. These are distinct from the historic processions held during droughts: at that time, the crucifix was carried in prayers for rain, to protect the harvest and prevent famine. The processions in May and October are an enduring tradition, while the prayers for rain were tied to droughts in the past.
Trails and Getting Around the Hills
The historic and nature trails of Covignano, Spadarolo and Vergiano are mostly footpaths; motorised traffic is prohibited. Plan to explore them on foot rather than use them as motorised routes.
