Roccamorice offers a range of options to consider when planning your trip: hermitages, evidence of mining history and agro-pastoral culture, an art collection, as well as hiking and sport climbing. This means you can balance cultural sites and outdoor activities as different interests during your stay.

Hermitages and landscape

The Eremo-Abbazia di Santo Spirito a Maiella is located in the Roccamorice area, within the Parco Nazionale della Majella. The Chiesa di Santo Spirito a Maiella is also in the Roccamorice area, in the heart of the park. It lies at 1,132 metres above sea level beside a limestone cliff surrounded by an extensive beech forest. Its elevation and the cliff give this place a different landscape setting from the Eremo di San Bartolomeo in Legio, which was built beneath a 50-metre-long rock overhang at an altitude of around 600 metres.

The two elevation figures help distinguish the sites without reducing them to a single landscape image. At Santo Spirito, the high cliff and beech forest are part of the setting described; at San Bartolomeo, the long rock overhang is the defining architectural feature.

Mining history and cultural heritage

Some of the most important mines in the Bacino di estrazione di asfalto e bitume della Maiella are located in the Roccamorice area. These include San Giorgio, Torretta, Acquafredda and Santo Spirito. The history of the industrial complex and its associated working culture spans approximately 1850 to 1950. In LocalitĂ  Acquafredda, industrial archaeology and the remaining mining landscape intersect with the natural surroundings and traces of earlier agro-pastoral culture. Industrial history and older forms of land use thus belong to the same set of themes.

The Capanne in Pietra a Secco offer another way to explore the area’s history. Farmers and shepherds built them from the early years of the 19th century onwards. They were used mainly as temporary shelters and storage for agricultural tools. The cultural heritage of the Capanne in Pietra a Secco in Roccamorice comprises more than 250 dry-stone huts. Their traditional use differs from the mining history, but is also part of local cultural history.

The Centro d’Arte e Cultura “Alberto Di Giovanni” is located in the Chiesa dell’Annunziata, commonly known as the Chiesa del Barone. The centre houses a collection of more than 70 paintings. Art and ecclesiastical architecture thus complement the themes of mining, agriculture and shepherding culture.

Hiking, climbing and guided activities

Hiking trail C7 leads from Roccamorice on foot either to Sentiero Spirito near Località Macchia Metola or to C1 at Località Pagliari. It is 5.9 kilometres long, takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes, and is rated E – Escursionistico. A longer hiking option is the route between Sant’Eufemia a Maiella and Roccamorice: it is 22 kilometres long, takes 7 hours and is rated EE for experienced hikers. The stated distances, durations and difficulty ratings make the two options easy to compare. Check trail conditions before setting out.

Sport climbing is possible at Parete dell’Orso in Valle di Santo Spirito. There are several climbing routes there, with different levels of difficulty. Hiking and climbing are therefore two distinct activities available in the Roccamorice area.

The information centre of the Parco Nazionale della Majella in Roccamorice is open daily from 15 June to 31 August, from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 16:00 to 19:00; check seasonal opening hours before your trip.
