Bolognano brings together archaeological sites, contemporary art, nature trails and winery experiences. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, you can first consider which of these interests will shape your trip. The places and activities differ not only in subject matter: specific requirements apply to some visits, and you should take them into account when planning.

History and art in Bolognano

Bolognano has medieval origins and was under the rule of the Abbey of San Clemente a Casauria for a long time. This historical background meets contemporary art in the town: the Case dell’Arte, della Musica e della Critica are located in its lanes. There are also permanent art installations in various parts of the town, including “Il luogo della natura.” These cultural connections can thus be found in different places and forms.

A striking example is Piantagione Paradise: the structure in Bolognano covers 800 square metres, is underground on two levels, and was conceived by German painter, sculptor and performance artist Joseph Beuys (1921–1986). The private Paradise Museum of Joseph Beuys asks visitors to contact them before visiting. This is important to bear in mind when planning if you are interested in the museum.

The winery experiences offered by Cantina Zaccagnini provide another way to explore the area, including walks through historic vineyards. Art venues, archaeological sites and vineyards appeal to different interests, and need not be combined into a single sightseeing route.

Archaeological caves and their distinctive features

The Grotta dei Piccioni is a significant Neolithic archaeological site. Access requires a reservation through the park’s information office in Bolognano. As access to the cave may change, check this requirement with the park again before your trip. This allows you to plan your visit around a specific access requirement.

Grotta Scura is also an archaeological site of regional and national importance. Finds there show traces of human activity dating back to the Neolithic period. At the same time, the cave is a fossil river cave: a karst cave formed by the Orta River when it flowed at a higher level than it does today. Grotta Scura therefore combines an archaeological connection with an explanation of its formation; the Grotta dei Piccioni is recognised as a significant Neolithic site and has an explicit reservation requirement that visitors should observe.

Trails, a waterfall and a nature reserve

There are two different details to consider when planning a walk: a hiking trail connects Piano d’Orta and Madonna del Monte, both of which are districts of Bolognano. The Cascata della Cisterna can be reached on foot from the town centre; the route goes around the Church of Sant’Antonio Abate.

The Regional Nature Reserve Valle dell’Orta is part of the area’s landscape. Established in 1989, it is part of Maiella National Park and covers 378 hectares. The reserve extends across the territories of the municipalities of Sant’Eufemia a Majella, Roccacaramanico, San Vittorino, Caramanico Terme, Salle, Musellaro, San Valentino and Bolognano in the Province of Pescara. Bolognano is therefore one of the municipalities whose territory lies within the reserve.

Plan your visit around your interests

When deciding what to visit, it’s worth considering a destination’s subject matter alongside its visiting requirements. A reservation is required for the Grotta dei Piccioni; the private Beuys Museum asks visitors to make contact in advance. If you’re more interested in trails and landscape, you can use the connections between the districts, the route to the Cascata della Cisterna and the larger nature reserve as a guide. This makes it possible to plan your stay in Bolognano around the subjects that genuinely interest you.
