If you are planning a stay in Brittoli, you can get to know the town through three themes: the slopes of Gran Sasso, historic buildings, and local olive oil and food culture. Brittoli lies on a rocky spur on the eastern slopes of Gran Sasso, between the Nora and Cigno rivers. The town is also one of the municipalities in the Voltigno and Valle D'Angri Nature Reserve. For your trip planning, this brings together landscape and local history: alongside viewpoints and walking paths, you can explore churches, palaces and the history of olive oil production.

Scenery and walking routes in Brittoli

One distinctive destination is the giant red bench on Monte Riccio. From Località Cona, you can reach it via a short walk; it stands at an altitude of 919 metres and offers a sweeping panoramic view over the Nora and Cigno valleys. If you want to include a viewpoint in your plans, the bench is a clearly identified destination. A walk along Brittoli’s old fortification wall offers a different perspective on the town. Here, the focus is not on elevation and views, but on the town’s historic structure.

Churches, palaces and local history

The Chiesa di San Carlo Borromeo was founded in 1126 and, after numerous restorations, now has a neoclassical appearance. A steep staircase leads from the churchyard to the entrance. At the Chiesetta di Sant'Antonio abate, stopping briefly is permitted, but parking is not. The municipal information about the staircase was updated on 21 August 2024, and the information about stopping and parking rules on 18 August 2024. Check these conditions before your visit.

Palazzo Pagliaccia, also known as Palazzo Pagliccia, is a baronial palace dating from the 16th century. It was built over earlier medieval structures and remodelled in the 19th century. Several historical periods therefore come together in this building. Palazzo Iannetti adds to the picture of the historic centre: the building is considered an interesting example of a grand residence in the town centre.

A walk through the historic centre leads to the ruins of the mother church, Madonna della Neve. The ruins are associated with a traditional story: a miracle attributed to the Madonna is said to have saved the harvest from an extraordinary snowfall in July. This story should be understood as a tradition. Brittoli is also home to a medieval polychrome wooden statuette of the enthroned Virgin Mary with Child, located in a sacristy. Its precise description specifies its material, age and subject without assigning it to a particular church building.

Olive oil and local dishes

The Antico Frantoio can be visited by appointment. There, a mill powered by mules illustrates traditional olive oil production. This visiting requirement sets the frantoio apart from a walk through the historic centre or the short walk to the giant bench: arrange an appointment in advance for your visit to the mill. Local dishes associated with Brittoli also include Pallotte cacio e uova and Pecorino. They add a culinary dimension to the description of the town, without implying where or when these foods are available. The town also has an equipped children’s playground.

Plan a stay that suits you

For your stay, you can first decide which side of Brittoli interests you most: the view from Monte Riccio, the historic paths and buildings, or the olive oil tradition, including a visit by appointment. The differences concern not only the subject, but also how you plan your visit: an appointment is required for the Antico Frantoio, while the route to the bench is described as a short walk from Località Cona. When comparing hotels in Brittoli, use these interests as a guide and check the location, amenities and availability directly with each listing.
