Föhr between mudflats, cycle paths and Frisian culture
Accommodation in Föhr
Föhr brings together the rhythm of the tides, cycle paths, nature watching and Frisian culture. If you’re looking for a hotel on Föhr, it helps to first decide which experiences you want to shape your stay: cycling, mudflats and nature, water sports or culture.
Getting there and finding your way
Föhr can only be reached by boat or by air. The W.D.R. catamaran, chartered to the partner Adler-Schiffe, serves as a fast passenger link between Föhr, Amrum and Dagebüll. Timetables and availability may change; check the latest information before your trip.
Cycle paths and themed routes
More than 200 kilometres of designated cycle paths and five themed routes offer different ways to explore Föhr by bike. A 21-kilometre cycle tour connects cultural highlights with an internationally renowned art museum. The approximately 11-kilometre Planet Trail runs from Wyk to Utersum and offers insights into astronomy and natural sciences. The two routes differ in length and theme: the cycle tour focuses on culture and art, while the Planet Trail focuses on astronomy and natural sciences.
An approximately eight-kilometre mudflat hike leads from Dunsum on Föhr to the northern tip of the neighbouring island of Amrum. Plan this tour with the tides and weather in mind. Guided mudflat hikes on Föhr also offer the chance to observe lugworms, mussels, starfish and mudflat birds.
Mudflats, tides and water sports
Föhr lies at the heart of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. You can experience nature in the rhythm of the tides at any time of year. Many events organised by the Wadden Sea Conservation Station start at the Föhr National Park House, including natural history mudflat tours, detective rallies and evening beach walks. Check the dates if you’d like to include an event in your travel plans.
Water sports are also part of island life: the water sports schools on Föhr offer courses for beginners and advanced participants in windsurfing, kiteboarding, stand-up paddleboarding and sailing. At the AQUAFÖHR wave pool, the swimming pools are filled with heated, unfiltered North Sea water. The wave feature in the large pool creates North Sea waves every half hour. Opening hours may vary; check the latest times before your visit.
Of the five surviving bird decoys on Föhr, only the Boldixum bird decoy is open to visitors. The Föhr National Park House has exhibitions on tidal-zone habitats, birds and the formation of the island; its exhibits also include a harbour porpoise skeleton and shells.
Frisian culture and history
The Museum Kunst der Westküste focuses on the sea and the coast and showcases important German and Scandinavian artists from 1830 to 1930. In the centre of Wyk, the Dr. Carl Häberlin Frisian Museum offers insights into Frisian history and culture. St. John’s Church, dating from the 12th century, is the largest church on Föhr and is also known as the Frisian Cathedral.
Near Borgsum, Lembecksburg preserves visible remains of a ring fort dating from the Viking Age. Its features include a moat and a circular rampart up to ten metres high and almost 100 metres in diameter. These dimensions give an impression of the scale of this historic structure.
The Frisian language is still present on Föhr today: around 3,000 islanders still speak Fering, the Föhr Frisian dialect. The King’s Ring Riding competition is also part of island tradition. Four ring-riding clubs each hold a King’s Ring Riding competition; the dates vary from year to year. If you’d like to experience one of these festivities, check the programme for your travel dates.
A taste of local products
