Dunsum offers several specific points to consider when choosing where to stay: the sea dike, Wadden Sea walks with different destinations, archaeological traces and two places to eat. Before booking, you can decide whether the landscape, excursions, local history or a café visit should play a bigger role in your stay.

Sea Dike and Landscape

Dunsum is situated on Föhr’s 22-kilometre-long sea dike. A walk north along the dike offers views towards Sylt and Amrum; at sunset, the expansive horizon shapes the view. Here, the focus is on the path along the dike and the distant views. This distinguishes the walk from the Wadden Sea walks, which have specific destinations such as seal banks or Amrum.

Wadden Sea Walks with Different Destinations

Seasonal Wadden Sea walks to the seal banks start at the dike in Groß-Dunsum. Another option is an approximately eight-kilometre walk across the Wadden Sea from Dunsum to the neighbouring island of Amrum. The walks differ in their destinations: one focuses on the seal banks, while the other follows the route to Amrum. Check the dates and availability of the seasonal walks before your trip. For the approximately eight-kilometre route, factor the tides and weather into your plans.

Cafés and Activities

At Hinrichsen’s family farm in Dunsum, a farm café and shop serve homemade cake, ice cream and soup. Breakfast is made predominantly with regional ingredients. The farm also offers swingolf, soccer golf, a petting zoo and play facilities for children. This means there are activities for families as well as food. Activities and their opening times may change; if you have a particular one in mind, check the current offerings in advance.

Café zum Wattenläufer is located on the Dunsum dike, where the Wadden Sea walks to Amrum begin. It offers traditional home-style cooking as well as cake, ice cream, waffles and pancakes. This distinguishes it from the family farm’s café: home-style cooking and sweet treats are the focus here, while the farm also offers the activities mentioned above. Opening hours and menus may change; check them before planning a visit.

Archaeological Traces

Dunsum’s archaeological history ranges from traces of Neolithic settlements to burial mounds from the Bronze and Iron Ages. Excavations near Groß-Dunsum also uncovered prehistoric shell heaps and a paved floor associated with an early two-room house. The local history thus includes evidence of settlements as well as graves from various prehistoric periods. This historical perspective adds another way of seeing Dunsum alongside its landscape and Wadden Sea activities.

Getting to Föhr

When travelling to Föhr, bear in mind that the island can only be reached by ship or by air. The W.D.R. catamaran, chartered to Adler-Schiffe, provides a fast passenger connection between Föhr, Amrum and Dagebüll. Check the timetable for your travel date, as times and availability may change.
