Alkersum brings together art and culture with marshland, riding activities and regional products. The Museum Kunst der WestkĂĽste, the Ferring Foundation Library and local traditions offer various starting points for planning your trip. Those interested in nature and trails will also find plenty to explore during their time here.

Museum, Garden and Ferring Foundation

Exhibitions at the Museum Kunst der Westküste change regularly; works by Scandinavian and German artists of the 19th and 20th centuries are on display. A visit also includes a look around the museum garden, with its historic trees and old Föhr rose varieties. Grethjens Gasthof welcomes guests and museum visitors both indoors and in the sheltered museum garden.

The museum’s main exhibition area is wheelchair accessible. It has an accessible toilet, a lift and ramps. If you rely on specific accessibility features, please confirm that they meet your needs before your visit. Two bicycle parking areas provide a place to leave bikes at the museum.

The Ferring Foundation Library holds around 10,000 books on Frisian studies, maritime history and philology. It is open for reference use from Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Visitors can use workstations, a photocopier, a microfilm scanner and free Wi-Fi. Plan your visit around these opening hours and check the visitor arrangements in advance if needed. The Ferring Foundation is open to everyone; guided tours of the grounds are available for groups.

Riding Trails, Marshland and Nature

Alkersum has marked riding trails, riding stables, indoor arenas and facilities for boarding horses. The local Hualewjonken also organizes guest riding, card evenings and get-togethers with other Hualewjonken associations on Föhr. If you are interested in taking part, check locally what is available on a specific date.

Alkersum lies between Föhr’s geest and marshland landscapes; green marsh meadows stretch across the Alkersumer Geest. The marsh areas are home to rabbits, waterfowl, hares and roe deer. Hedges and rows of trees provide them with shelter. At rest areas along the Alkersumer Marschweg, you can take in the sounds of nature or watch the sunset. The landscape and wildlife offer two distinct reasons to spend time outdoors.

Across the wider destination of Föhr, there are more than 200 kilometers of designated cycling routes and five themed routes. Routes described for Föhr also pass through Alkersum. Check the specific route before setting off. This helps distinguish the island-wide cycling network from the routes that pass through Alkersum.

Cheese and Farm Products

Föhrer Inselkäse farm processes milk year-round into seven varieties of cow’s milk cheese. Alongside its cheeses, the farm shop sells homemade jam and egg liqueur, as well as Föhr eggs, sausage, regional wines, pasta, mustard and oils. The selection combines the farm’s own products with other regional foods. If you are looking for specific products, check what is currently available on site.

In summer, a small café supplements the farm shop. It serves coffee, sweets and freshly topped cheese sandwiches. The café is explicitly a seasonal offering, so plan your visit for the summer and check the current visitor arrangements if needed.

Getting to Föhr and Finding Your Way Around

Föhr can only be reached by ship or by air. From the mainland, take the train or drive to Dagebüll Mole; from there, ferries operated by Wyker Dampfschiff-Reederei go to Wyk on Föhr. Timetables and fares may change, so it is worth checking the latest information before you travel.

Information about the museum, library, riding activities, marsh trail and farm shop gives you different starting points for exploring Alkersum as a travel destination.
