Wrixum: Frisian Village History and Walking Paths
Accommodation in Wrixum
Frisian architecture, an old mill and paths through the village and forest give Wrixum its distinctive character. Gardens, places to play and exercise, and the connection to Wyk also shape a stay in the village.
Village Layout and Frisian Houses
The old village quarter developed in the 15th century as a long, narrow village along the marsh. In the north, the settlement pattern that emerged where the geest meets the marsh has been preserved, and the historic buildings there are also well maintained.
Traditional Frisian houses in Wrixum have thatched roofs and distinctive gables above their entrance doors. These architectural features give the village a distinctly Frisian character. The Bop footpath winds through the village and offers a way to explore Wrixum on foot.
Mill and St. Nicolai
The Wrixum Mill is a windmill of the Großer Erdholländer type. It dates from 1851 and operated until 1960. It is one of five windmills on Föhr.
The St. Nicolai Church stands right next to the mill, and its origins date back to around 1240. The church and mill are on the border with Boldixum, a district of Wyk. Their immediate proximity brings two prominent historic buildings together in one place.
Apple Orchard and Green Spaces
The apple orchard next to Wrixum Mill is a park with paths and a fountain. Young trees of old fruit varieties grow there. Roses bloom from spring through late autumn; Wrixum’s colorful gardens also offer visitors places to relax. You can also add some time outdoors to your stay.
Walking Paths and Activities for Children
Opened in 2025, the Grüffelo Trail in Wrixum Forest is an approximately 1 km woodland walk. Puzzles about the Gruffalo and his friends introduce visitors to local wildlife and plants in a playful way. The trail is designed for children aged 3 to 6. Puzzle maps are available at the starting point at the end of Lindenweg. Visitor information and map distribution may change; check the latest information before your visit.
By comparison, the Bop footpath leads through the village and is a way to explore Wrixum, while the Grüffelo Trail runs through the forest. The paths therefore offer different perspectives on the village and its surroundings. Wrixum also has a large sports and play area with swings, climbing equipment and space to play football.
Wrixum and Wyk
Wyk’s center is 2 km from Wrixum, and the beach is also 2 km away. Wyk is easy to reach on foot from Wrixum. Four nearby bus stops connect the village to Wyk in just a few minutes.
When planning your trip, you can consider walking and taking the bus as different options. Check the current timetable and stop information before travelling, as stop details may change.
