Castle history, traditional milling and river floodplains offer different perspectives on North Saxony. In Torgau, history reaches back to the Reformation; Bad DĂĽben brings together a museum and a historic spa park. Kaolin mining and railways are the focus in MĂĽgeln.

Castle History and Historic Traces in Torgau

The castle chapel at Hartenfels Castle in Torgau was inaugurated by Martin Luther on 5 October 1544 with a festive sermon, making it the world’s first and only church building of its kind. Another striking structure is the Great Wendelstein: the spiral staircase tower is 28.2 metres high; its daring design is unique in the world and considered an architectural masterpiece of the Early Renaissance.

The Torgau Museum Trail brings together historical figures, significant events and evidence of past centuries at authentic locations in the heart of the old town. The chapel, staircase tower and museum trail each offer a different focus: a special moment in history, an outstanding architectural detail and the city’s history at the sites where it unfolded.

Museum, Spa Park and Heritage Trail

In Bad Düben, the Düben Castle Landscape Museum has been housed within the castle walls since 1953. Its permanent exhibition spans eleven newly designed rooms and explores the cultural landscape of the Dübener Heide, shaped by human activity. The spa park also has a long history: it was established in 1846 as one of Germany’s first public parks. In Bad Düben, the museum and park thus offer two different ways to explore the town and its landscape.

In Wermsdorf, the local history trail connects important sites in the town’s history. Its route leads from the Old Hunting Lodge along Schlossstraße to Hubertusburg Palace. The theme shapes your visit: here, the focus is on historic sites and the order in which they appear, while the museum in Bad Düben centres on a permanent exhibition.

Kaolin and Railways in MĂĽgeln

The Geoportal at Mügeln Station – Kaolin Experience World is a visitor and information centre. Photos, original mining tools, kaolin objects, information panels and terminals tell the story of kaolin mining. This gives you a chance to encounter the subject not only as a raw material, but also through exhibits and information.

Another experience world in Mügeln is devoted to railways. Visitors can explore different forms of rail travel, from the narrow-gauge railway in Oschatz to model railways. Together, the two attractions showcase different technical subjects—kaolin mining and railways—and make it easy to choose what to include in your sightseeing plans.

Landscapes and Active Days

North Saxony district includes Dübener Heide Nature Park, Dahlener Heide, Wermsdorf Forest and the floodplains along the Elbe and Mulde rivers. Options for active leisure include cycling, hiking and sailing. The district’s network of hiking and cycling trails is well developed and signposted, and is close to Leipzig, a cultural and trade fair city.

The Obstland Route can also be described by its route figures: it is around 67 kilometres long, 21 kilometres of which run through North Saxony district. The route and the hiking and cycling trail network are different points of reference; the figures given for the Obstland Route refer to its total length and the section within the district.

In the lake district, formed from former open-cast mines, you can try water skiing. Water-based activities add to the options for exploring on foot and by bike. Traditional crafts are also part of the visitor experience in the milling region: guests are personally welcomed by the master miller with the millers’ greeting “Glück zu” (“Good luck”) and introduced to the secrets of the milling trade.

In Oschatz, O-Schatz Park is a free-entry family, animal and leisure park with animals, a maze, mini golf and a playground. As facilities may change, check which attractions are currently available before your visit.

When choosing a hotel, you can first decide what you are most interested in seeing: the castle and old town in Torgau, the castle and spa park in Bad DĂĽben, the heritage trail in Wermsdorf or the experience worlds in MĂĽgeln. This helps you focus your search on the kind of trip you want.
