Belgern: Town Hall, Roland Statue, and Market Square

In the Belgern district, the Renaissance town hall dates from 1575 to 1578 and has retained its original architectural form. Standing beside it is a stone Roland statue almost six meters high, created in 1610. The statue is associated with judicial authority as well as market and minting rights. The historic market square is surrounded by old town houses; opposite the town hall stands the stone distance column, erected by Augustus the Strong in 1730. The town hall, Roland statue, and square offer several ways to explore the town’s history.

Schildau: Church and the Gneisenau Memorial

In the Schildau district, the tower of St. Mary’s is older than the late Romanesque basilica, which was built around 1170. The church contains a winged altar from the 15th century. Its carved scenes depict the story of Jesus and the life of Mary. The tower, basilica, and altar thus represent different aspects of religious architecture and visual art.

The Gneisenau Monument was erected in Schildau’s market square in 1960 to mark the 200th birthday of Neidhardt von Gneisenau. Belgern-Schildau is home to Saxony’s only Gneisenau memorial site. The Schildbürger and Gneisenau Museum presents information about August Neidhart von Gneisenau and stories about the pranks of the Schildbürger.

Museum Themes in Belgern

Since 2004, the Belgern Town Museum has been housed in the Old Forge, on one of the town’s oldest house plots. It explores the role of the Elbe in local history and the development of crafts, agriculture, brewing, winegrowing, and markets. It thus complements the historic buildings in Belgern’s center with themes relating to local life and livelihoods.
