Wermsdorf: Castle History, Culture and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Wermsdorf
Castle history, archaeological traces and hikes offer different ways to explore Wermsdorf during your stay. For planning, it helps to look at specific options: a guided tour of the castle, trails through the Cultural Landscape Museum, the Local History Trail and the Wermsdorf–Collm circular hike each differ in subject and distance.
Hubertusburg Palace and Local History
Hubertusburg Palace is a royal hunting residence completed in 1752. It is considered one of Germany’s major palace complexes from the 18th century. In 1763, negotiations took place there that were connected with the end of the Seven Years’ War. The historic paving in the palace courtyard has been restored. You can book guided tours of Hubertusburg Palace through the Wermsdorf Tourist Information Office.
Archaeological Trails and Local History
The Cultural Landscape Museum is located in the western part of Wermsdorf Forest, in the area around Kirchenteich, Drei-Teichen and Doktorteich. It showcases archaeological remains from 3,000 years of human settlement in the area. As an open-air museum, it offers trails of about 2 to 10 km through excavation sites, burial grounds and archaeological remains. Guided tours are available by arrangement; please arrange them in advance.
The Local History Trail links important sites in Wermsdorf’s history with explanatory information boards. It starts at the bridge by the Old Hunting Lodge, follows Schlossstraße to Hubertusburg Palace, passes through Hirschplatz and ends at the riding hall. This makes it possible to follow the route by its stops, while the open-air museum also provides approximate trail lengths.
Hiking and Landscape
The Wermsdorf–Collm route is a 16.84-kilometer circular hike of moderate difficulty. Compared with the Cultural Landscape Museum’s trails, which are about 2 to 10 km long, it is the longer option. Regional buses 630 from Grimma, 801 from Oschatz and 804 from Mügeln serve Wermsdorf for the hike. Check trail conditions and timetables before setting out, as conditions and transport services may change.
The 18-meter-high Albert Tower is accessible to hikers and day-trippers; seasonal closures due to weather are possible. Horstsee covers about 70 hectares and lies directly on a watershed. At Collmberg, a quarry on its southwestern side is designated a geological natural monument and offers insight into the region’s geological development.
More Cultural Sites and Regional Cuisine
