Bad Düben offers plenty to explore during a stay filled with culture, walks and cycling: Düben Castle with its landscape museum, marked trails and the Mulde floodplain each provide a different experience. If you’re looking for a hotel in Bad Düben, your planned activities can help you decide what to see in the town and its surroundings. There’s plenty to explore, from the castle’s history to routes through the spa park and countryside.

Düben Castle and its history

The Dübener Heide Landscape Museum opened in the main building of Düben Castle in 1953. It presents Bad Düben as a town of farming citizens and craftspeople, and explores its location on the southern edge of the contiguous forest. The museum’s themes therefore include both local history and the landscape.

The tower “Lug ins Land” was built around 1206 on older stone foundations and is the oldest surviving building at the castle. A dungeon in the tower is associated with a historic witch trial. In 1534, a settlement hearing involving Hans Kohlhase took place in the castle courtroom.

The hilltop ship mill is also located on the castle grounds. The outdoor grounds are open to visitors free of charge year-round. Check the visitor information before your visit.

Walking trails

Five marked terrain therapy trails are open to everyone, have seating and pass cultural and historical sites such as the Obermühle mill and the spa park. The accessible Spa Town Trail leads from the tourist information area into the spa district and on to the spa park. A walking school, barefoot path and terrain therapy trails are also located there.

The Waldhof Trail is a loop that passes parts of Bad Düben and runs along the Tiglitz Forest towards Authausen. The route follows natural paths between fields and offers wide-ranging views. The suggested starting point is the Leipziger Straße car park near the Mulde bridge. The Billi-Bockert Adventure Trail is family-oriented and designed especially for children; it can be split into sections. Check the current access conditions before your visit.

Cycling and arriving

A family-friendly loop includes a ferry crossing to Gruna in the Mulde floodplain. A regional cycling route connects Bad Düben with Torgau over around 45 kilometres and links the Mulde Cycle Route with the Elbe Cycle Route. This gives you two different options to plan around: a loop with a ferry crossing and a roughly 45-kilometre route connecting towns and cycle paths. If you plan to cross by ferry, it’s best to check the timetable in advance.

For arrivals by water, there is a newly built landing stage on the Mulde near the town centre. Together with the walking and cycling routes, it provides another point of reference for planning a trip to Bad Düben.

The Red Bank

The landscape also tells the story of how the region was used: the Red Bank is a steep slope up to 15 metres high. It was formed from deposited, leached alum earth waste; alum earth was mined here from the 16th to the 19th century. The shape of the slope is therefore directly connected to the area’s former mining activity.
