Warendorf: Stallion Parades, Old Town and Regional Trails
Accommodation in Warendorf
Warendorf combines equestrian tradition with historic buildings and outdoor activities in the district. At the annual stallion parades in late September, more than 100 stallions are presented in 20 professionally narrated displays over three days. The event dates provide a clear focus for travel planning; the old town and cultural venues offer other themes. If you would like to combine your stay with some activity, you can also explore regional cycling and riding routes as well as the Feldmark recreation area.
Equestrian Tradition and Historic Buildings
More than 300 listed houses stand in Warendorf’s historic old town. The Bentheim Tower is the only surviving one of the five original structures in the fortification ring, built around 1300; it can only be viewed from the outside. The tower and the houses offer different points of interest: the history of the fortifications on the one hand, and the historic buildings on the other.
The collegiate church of St. Boniface is located in the Warendorf district of Freckenhorst. The five-towered church dates from the late 11th century and is considered one of Westphalia’s most significant Romanesque religious buildings. Its sacred architecture adds a distinct historical focus alongside equestrian tradition and the town’s history.
Culture in Telgte
In Telgte’s old town, the RELíGIO Museum presents religious life across a broad span of time in 1,500 m² of exhibition space, from Bronze Age grave goods to the religious diversity of the present day. One notable individual exhibit is the Telgte Lenten Veil. Measuring 4.40 m by 7.40 m, it is one of the largest Lenten veils in Westphalia. If the specific presentation is important for your visit, check the current exhibition information in advance, as details may change.
Feldmark Lake and Routes in Sassenberg
The Feldmark recreation area, northeast of Sassenberg, covers a total of 114 ha. Feldmark Lake has a water surface of around 13 ha and a bird sanctuary island. An extensive network of hiking trails, with a fitness trail, passes an adventure playground and a foot-wading pool. This lets you enjoy both the natural surroundings and the area’s various recreational amenities.
At the boathouse and landing stage on Feldmark Lake, sailors, surfers and pedal-boat users can enjoy their hobby on weekends and by arrangement. Check opening hours and arrangements before your trip if you plan to take part in these activities.
Cycling and Riding Routes in the Warendorf District
The 123 km Werse Cycle Route runs through the southern Warendorf district, with gentle gradients. Along the route are observation towers, 34 information boards and regular rest stops with tables and benches. There are train stations and parking lots at many places along the route, making it possible to arrive by train or car and transport your bicycle.
For comparing routes: the eastern loop of the 100 Castles Route is 230 km long and runs through the Warendorf district. There are 14 shelters with tables and benches along the route. The Warendorf riding route is part of the 1,000 km Münsterland riding route. Its riding and hiking trails pass through the Münsterland countryside and offer routes for different ability levels. These routes give you specific options for deciding whether to spend your stay cycling, riding or walking.
