Telgte offers you a range of reasons to plan a stay: pilgrimage and religious art, walks through the Old Town, and nature and activities on the water. You can focus on each individually; the specific details will help you put together an itinerary based on your interests and the time you have available.

Pilgrimage and Religious Culture

Telgte was a pilgrimage destination dedicated to the Holy Cross as early as the 13th century; an indulgence letter from 1300 provides evidence of this. The tradition remains alive today: every year, around fifty large pilgrimages from parishes in the Diocese of Münster travel to Telgte to visit the Sorrowful Mother. The number may vary from year to year. The miraculous image of Telgte, carved from poplar wood, was created around 1370 and is housed in the Baroque pilgrimage chapel.

RELíGIO, the Westphalian Museum of Religious Culture, also explores this theme. The Telgte Lenten Veil is on permanent display in an exhibition room created especially for it. It consists of 33 panels depicting the Passion, symbols of the four Evangelists, the Lamb of God, and five scenes from the Old Testament. The veil is considered the best-preserved Lenten veil from the early 17th century in the region. If you plan to visit the museum, check the current visitor arrangements beforehand.

RELíGIO is located at Herrenstraße 1–2. The pilgrimage chapel and the museum thus offer different ways to explore Telgte’s religious history: the miraculous image in the chapel, and the Lenten Veil with its diverse imagery in the museum.

Old Town and Walks

The market square and Kapellenstraße are at the heart of Telgte’s Old Town and are popular with visitors and locals alike. Ten sculptures by Prof. Jörg Heydemann, made of bronze and sandstone, are spread throughout the Old Town. The Kulturspur offers another way to find your bearings: marked with red paving stones, it leads through Telgte’s attractive corners and lanes. You can choose among a central square, artworks in the townscape, and a marked route as different starting points for a walk.

The Telgte audio tour starts at the market square and follows a route of around 1.2 kilometers past sights in Telgte. App availability may change, so check before planning your visit. If you would prefer to join a guided town walk, Tourismus + Kultur offers several tours with different themes. Find out the latest booking details before your trip.

Market and Annual Events

The Mariä-Geburts-Markt has been held since 1616 and continues to take place in Telgte today. Its program and specific dates vary from year to year. If the market is important to your travel plans, check the dates for your chosen period rather than relying on a fixed calendar entry.

Emsauenpark and Canoe Tours

Emsauenpark is located in the Emsaue nature reserve, which has been designated a European nature conservation area because of its great ecological importance. The park has circular paths for walking and exploring nature. It offers a distinct natural setting to complement the Old Town and its artworks.

You can also experience Telgte from the water. The Tom Sawyer canoe tour starts on Westbeverner Straße (WAF 10) in Telgte, goes to Benediktshof in Münster-Handorf (MS 1), and takes around two and a half hours. This is different from the general opportunity to try canoeing along the route from Telgte towards Münster-Handorf or Gelmer. Booking details for the canoe tour may change; you should also check seasonal availability in advance.

During your stay, you can weigh up religious culture, Old Town walks, and activities in nature or on the water. The approximate length of the audio tour and the stated duration of the canoe tour provide two different planning details: a route length and a time duration.
