Sassenberg offers two distinct highlights for planning a stay: the Feldmark recreational area, with its lake and trails, and historical traces throughout the town. At the Feldmarksee, water activities and leisure facilities take centre stage; in town, a historical walking tour, a longer wayside shrine tour and individual buildings offer a glimpse into the past. You can decide which to focus on based on the activities you prefer and the distance you want to cover.

Feldmarksee and leisure facilities

The 114-hectare Feldmark recreational area lies northeast of Sassenberg. At its centre is the Feldmarksee, with a water surface of around 13 hectares and a bird sanctuary island. These figures refer to different areas: 114 hectares covers the recreational area, while around 13 hectares refers to the lake’s water surface. This places the lake in context as the centrepiece of a larger area.

Feldmark has an extensive network of walking trails, as well as a fitness trail, adventure playground and foot-wading pool. It also has a signposted, accessible circular trail for wheelchair users. Check local trail accessibility before your visit. Feldmark is considered a destination for families, groups and individuals; larger parking areas are located at the main entrances.

Swimming and water sports

At the Feldmarksee, you can combine walks and cycling with swimming, sailing, surfing, pedal boating and fishing. The boathouse at the Feldmarksee supports sailing, surfing and pedal boating; pedal boats are available on weekends or by arrangement. The beach is an EU-designated bathing water and is subject to regular bacteriological and physico-chemical testing. Check the water quality and seasonal operating details before your visit. If you plan to go pedal boating, visit on a weekend or arrange a time in advance.

Historical trails and buildings

The historical town walk is just under two kilometres long and leads to traces and remains from the time of the Prince-Bishopric of Münster. Another option is the approximately 14-kilometre wayside shrine circular tour in and around the town centre, which can be done on foot or by bicycle. The historical walk is considerably shorter, while the wayside shrine tour offers a longer route. This difference can help you choose between a shorter stroll and a longer loop, which is also suitable for cycling.

More than 160 wayside shrines and wayside crosses are located throughout the town. St. John the Evangelist was built in 1670 under Prince-Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen. Haus Schücking was built in 1754 by Johann Conrad Schlaun for the episcopal chancellor Engelbert Schücking; you can visit only the exterior. The pheasantry in Sassenberg’s Tiergarten was added in the late 17th century.

The former Tiergarten, known locally as Brook, is also part of the area’s historical highlights: the EmsRadweg visitor profile links a walk there with Haus Schücking in the town centre. During your stay, you can choose between the trails and water activities of Feldmark and walks and historical sites in Sassenberg.
