Discover Ennigerloh: History, Culture and Activities
Accommodation in Ennigerloh
Ennigerloh lies in the parkland of the southeastern Münsterland and is the geographical centre of the district of Warendorf. The town combines historic buildings, cultural attractions and opportunities for active days. These include St. James’s Church, the Alte Brennerei Schwake, the Ennigerloh Windmill, and activities related to audio, dirt biking and horse riding. The different options let you tailor your stay to history, events or activities.
Church and Culture in Ennigerloh
At St. James’s Church, you can explore its architectural history alongside the early history of the parish. The older part of the church is a Romanesque hall church; St. James’s was first mentioned as a parish in 1193. The year refers to its first mention as a parish, while the Romanesque classification explicitly applies to the older part of the church. This brings a specific architectural classification together with an early historical reference.
The cultural programme takes centre stage at the Alte Brennerei Schwake. It includes cabaret, theatre, music, poetry performances and exhibitions; the venue also houses two cinemas and the Oelde-Ennigerloh Adult Education Centre. The offerings range from stage performances and music to exhibitions and cinema. The programme of individual events may change, so it is worth checking the current dates in advance. A lift enables barrier-free visits for people with reduced mobility. If needed, check the lift’s current status before your visit.
The Ennigerloh Windmill
The Ennigerloh Windmill was built in 1869 as a Dutch-style post mill with local rubble-stone walls and a rotating cap. It has been a listed building since 1984. Its design, materials and movable cap describe different features of this technical structure. There is also a bakehouse at the mill site for traditional wood-fired baking. Recurring events include the Maypole and Mill Festival, German Mill Day and Open Monument Day. Check the event dates before your trip.
Audio Experiences and Activities
The Lauschinseln audio tour leads to twelve stops featuring informative and entertaining audio plays that offer insights into Ennigerloh’s history. Each stop also includes a children’s trail with questions and puzzles. The tour thus combines audio content with short activities, with a focus on the town’s history.
For a different kind of activity, there is a publicly accessible dirt bike track. It was created in 2024 and includes a 455-metre-long course on an area of around 3,800 square metres. Check the applicable access conditions before your visit. Those interested in horse riding can consider the 34-kilometre section of the Münsterland Riding Route: it passes through Oelde and Ennigerloh to Beelen and includes five riding and rest stops.
Individual guided tours in Ennigerloh can also be booked. Confirm availability before your trip. This lets you choose between a guided tour, the audio tour, cultural offerings and the other destinations described, without treating these different options as equivalent.
