Discover Visbek through its varied historical and scenic themes: the megalithic tombs are located near Engelmannsbäke, while ArchäoVisbek and St. Vitus Church in the town offer different ways to explore archaeology and history. There are also circular tours of varying lengths and guided tours of the municipality. If you are looking for a hotel in Visbek, these local highlights can help you decide which experiences you would like to include in your stay.

Megalithic Tombs, Archaeology and Church Architecture

A section of the “Road of Megalithic Culture” runs through the municipality of Visbek. The Visbeker Bräutigam and the Heidenopfertisch are located near Engelmannsbäke. The Visbeker Bräutigam is just over 100 metres long and is considered the largest megalithic tomb in Lower Saxony. Both sites are considered the largest megalithic tombs in northern Germany.

ArchäoVisbek was inaugurated in May 2018 and offers insights into the archaeology and history of Visbek. The exhibition showcases historical artefacts and finds from major excavations carried out in recent years. In the centre of Visbek stands the present-day neo-Gothic St. Vitus Church. It was built between 1872 and 1876 and is the seventh church to stand on this site. The Abbot Gerbert Castus monument, a bronze sculpture dating from 1984, stands at Klosterplatz on the north side of the parish church.

Circular Tours by Distance and Starting Point

The “Auenlandschaft” circular tour is 5.1 kilometres long and lies in the northern part of the municipality of Visbek. It starts at the Bullmühle car park and passes through the “Bäken between Endeler and Holzhauser Heide” nature reserve. “Rund um die Endeler Heide” is a designated circular tour covering 15.4 kilometres and is one of the longest in the district of Vechta. The 7.8-kilometre “Kleine Visbeker Tour” has two starting points: the town hall or the Heimathaus at Rechterfelder Straße 1.

In terms of distance, Auenlandschaft is the shortest of these three examples, while “Rund um die Endeler Heide” is the longest. The Kleine Visbeker Tour also offers a choice of two starting points. This makes it possible to distinguish the routes by their stated length and, for this tour, by their starting point as well.

Guided and Virtual Tours

Visbek’s guides offer a variety of tours through the municipality. By prior arrangement, a custom tour can be organised for groups, including in Low German if requested. You can take a tour of the municipality with a virtual guide; access is available via a QR code or a web address on the municipal website.

Another seasonal type of guided tour is “Der Hauch des Hünengeistes” (“The Breath of the Giant’s Ghost”): during the darker months, an evening torchlit tour explores the stories of the Heidenopfertisch and the Visbeker Bräutigam. Alongside the routes, this offers a guided way to discover the history of the two megalithic tombs.
