Discover Vechta: Citadel, Gardens and Trails

Vechta offers a range of options for a stay with different focuses: the citadel and the Zeughaus tell the story of the town, while gardens, trails and golf offer further possibilities. The places and activities vary in focus, from hands-on exhibitions to outdoor pursuits.

Zeughaus, Citadel and the Middle Ages

The Vechta Museum is housed in the historic Zeughaus of Vechta Citadel. At the Museum in the Zeughaus, visitors can get hands-on and touch exhibits in the Centre for Experimental Medieval History. This adds a practical, interactive perspective to exploring history.

Castrum Vechtense, a medieval three-island castle complex dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, is located in the Citadel Park. It includes a three-storey castle tower built using medieval timber construction methods. Inside, visitors learn about medieval life and how the tower was used as living and working space, as well as for defence. The complex thus connects the history of a castle with insights into the tower’s various functions.

The Kaponier is also part of Vechta’s fortress history. It stands next to the Zeughaus and is the only other surviving fortress building from the former citadel. Unlike the reconstructed sections of the Citadel Park, the building is a reminder of the original fabric of the former fortress.

Gardens and Reconstructed Fortress Grounds

The freely accessible open-air grounds of the Citadel Park include several gardens. These include a rose garden with an open Baroque pavilion. The park is a partial reconstruction of the former fortress: the Friedrich-Christian Bastion has been fully reconstructed, while the Maximilian Bastion has been reconstructed halfway. Together, the Citadel Park and the Citadel Square in front of the Zeughaus cover 22 hectares. The gardens and fortress architecture offer different highlights for enjoying the outdoors.

Trails and Outdoor Activities

Gut Füchtel is a former moated castle built in the 14th century, located on the “Pickerweg” hiking trail. Well-maintained paths run through the countryside and are suitable for day-trippers, cyclists and hikers. This makes it possible to combine an excursion with the historic character of the former castle estate, without limiting the route to any particular mode of travel.

Gut Welpe offers a different activity: a well-maintained 18-hole golf course is located in the Welpe Forest of the same name in Vechta. Those considering a choice of activities will find both trails through the countryside and a specific golfing option in Vechta. These two offerings appeal to different interests and complement the town’s historical attractions with outdoor recreation.

Hiking and Cycling in the District of Vechta
