Dinklage combines the history of its castle and churches with the castle forest, wildlife watching and a variety of routes. If you’re looking for a hotel in Dinklage, these highlights can help you choose a destination based on the activities you have planned. Options range from historic sites and trails to an educational program for school classes and activities at the mill festival.

Dinklage Castle and Historic Buildings

Dinklage Castle is one of the oldest and most significant moated castle complexes in the Oldenburg Münsterland. Clemens August, Count von Galen, was born at Dinklage Castle on March 16, 1878, the eleventh child of Ferdinand, Count von Galen, and Elisabeth, née Imperial Countess von Spee. The castle forest stretches between the motorway, the town of Dinklage and the flood meadows southwest of the town. The remains of the so-called “Ferdinandsburg” can be found in the forest, 500 meters east of the present-day castle grounds. The castle chapel was built in the Neo-Gothic style between 1841 and 1844.

St. Catharina parish church in the town center is also Neo-Gothic: the three-aisled church was built in 1875/78 by August Hanemann of Münster and consecrated in 1884. Its 72-meter-high tower is considered the tallest in the Oldenburg Münsterland. The construction dates distinguish the newer parish church from the castle chapel. Dinklage’s architectural history can thus be seen in two different church buildings, which are not part of the same complex.

Routes for Culture and Recreation

The Mut-Weg (Courage Trail) connects St. Catharina parish church with Dinklage Castle. Along the historic processional route are eight sculptures exploring different aspects of courage. The 24-kilometer Cardinal’s Trail between Damme and Dinklage offers a different setting. It follows the life and work of Cardinal von Galen and is divided into four stages, with five stops offering reflections on the “Cardinal” virtues. While the Mut-Weg connects two places in Dinklage, the pilgrimage trail extends beyond the town limits.

For a cycling tour, the “From Castle to Castle” route connects Dinklage Castle with Burg Hopen in Lohne and passes through forests and meadows. Another option in the front section of Dinklage’s castle forest is the reopened fitness trail, which has 14 stations along a 2.8-kilometer route. These distances provide different reference points for planning; facilities on the fitness trail may change. Check the trail’s current condition before visiting.

Nature and Wildlife Park

At Dinklage Wildlife Park, visitors can get up close to fallow deer, goats, chickens, sheep and miniature pigs. The park is located in a 27-hectare protected landscape area and serves both as a place for recreation and for environmental education for the local community. Wildlife watching and nature education are therefore two aspects of this place. The castle forest also provides the setting for the “From Castle to Castle” cycling route and the fitness trail, while the Mut-Weg connects the forest with a cultural trail.

The Schwege Mill: Educational Program and Mill Festival

The Schwege Mill is a learning venue for school classes. There, they can learn about the function and structure of a mill and its equipment. The school program also covers different types of flour and how the ovens in the bakehouse work. The program is intended for school classes.

At the mill festival, visitors can buy a variety of freshly baked stone-oven breads; the Friends’ Association also gives interested visitors tours of the mill. Bread sales and tours are offered as part of the festival, whose dates and program may vary. If you’re planning to take part in either activity, check the latest festival dates in advance.
