Hattersheim am Main brings together historic sites, green spaces and trails that appeal to a range of interests. The Old Post Office and the town museum offer insights into postal and local history; Keltenpark, Wasserwerksallee, Rosarium and the animal enclosure each have their own character. When planning your stay, it is worth organizing the attractions according to your interests: history and archaeological finds sit alongside walking and cycling routes and an animal enclosure.

Postal History and Archaeological Traces

The Old Post Office in Hattersheim is listed in the register of monuments of the State of Hesse as a cultural monument under Section 2(1) of the Hessian Monument Protection Act, for historical and artistic reasons. Historically, it was a horse-changing station and postal station on the Thurn and Taxis postal service along the medieval Frankfurt–Mainz escort road. This postal service held the German postal monopoly from 1489 to 1850. The site thus connects local history with a postal route linking Frankfurt and Mainz.

The Hattersheim Town Museum focuses in particular on archaeology and the Celts. It is housed in a former Sarotti workshop building in Hattersheim’s Chocolate Quarter. On display are finds from the Celtic and Neolithic periods, discovered during various excavations in the town. The building’s former use and the archaeological finds offer different ways to explore Hattersheim’s history: a former workshop on the one hand, and evidence of settlements from long ago on the other.

Green Spaces and Trails in Hattersheim

Keltenpark contributes to Hattersheim’s overall green character; archaeological finds are also located there. Wasserwerksallee offers a different perspective on nature and history. The avenue, about two kilometers long, is protected as a natural and cultural monument, forms part of the Regional Park Circular Route, and is a destination for walks and bike rides. It combines a nature experience with industrial history. It leads to the waterworks built in 1909 and is closed to motor traffic.

Rosarium lies on the western edge of town, between the cemetery and the historic Wasserwerksallee. It is easily reached on foot or by bike from Hattersheim town center. Concerts, readings and festivals are held at Rosarium. If you are planning to visit for an event, it is best to check the current schedule.

Animal Enclosure and Long-Distance Routes

The Hattersheim animal enclosure on the Schwarzbach is a small petting zoo and an outing destination for families. It is located at the corner of Glockwiesenweg and Eschenbachstraße. From the town center, you can reach it on foot or by bike via Schwarzbachweg. The enclosure is home to donkeys, Rhön sheep, goats and pygmy goats, as well as geese, ducks, chickens, rabbits and various bird species. This makes it clearly distinct from the cultural and historical sites and the trails through green spaces.

Two long-distance routes also pass through Hattersheim’s municipal area. The Main Cycle Route is one of Germany’s most varied long-distance cycling routes. The Rhine-Main Industrial Heritage Route links important industrial heritage sites between Miltenberg on the Main and Bingen on the Rhine. In Hattersheim, it adds a broader regional context to the local history. The attractions described offer a variety of options for your stay, from cultural and historical sites and archaeological finds to walking and cycling tours.
