When choosing a hotel in Flörsheim am Main, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your stay: Old Town history, culture and wine, or paths along the Main. The town offers different ways to explore these themes – from the Main Tower and places of remembrance to circular hiking trails in Weilbach and Wicker.

The Old Town and Flörsheim’s history

The renovated Old Town of Flörsheim am Main has been designated a cultural asset worthy of protection under an international convention. One of its striking buildings is the Main Tower, considered the oldest surviving building in the town and built in the mid-16th century. Even before the Thirty Years’ War, it served as an early modern fortification that protected the banks of the Main and controlled river traffic.

Another place of remembrance is in Synagogengasse. A memorial stone is mounted on the surviving outer wall of the former synagogue. Its inscription commemorates the synagogue of the Jewish community of Flörsheim am Main, which stood there from 1718 to 1938. The surviving parts can be viewed through a window in the wall and are freely accessible. St. Gallus is considered a landmark of Flörsheim. The first Gallus Concert officially took place on November 9, 1980; the concert series was intended to turn the Flörsheim church into a venue for musical events. Check the current program before attending a concert.

At the local history museum, the Schütz Gallery mainly displays 18th-century paintings by the Schütz family of painters, who came from Flörsheim. The faience cabinet focuses on Flörsheim faience from the 18th and early 19th centuries. Before visiting, it is advisable to check the current visitor regulations, as access may be restricted in connection with renovation work.

Hiking trails by route profile

The Main Hiking Trail runs from the Eddersheim lock along the embankment to Flörsheim. There, it passes the Main Tower, the Berlin Fountain and the “Flörsheimer Fahr,” continuing toward Keramag/Falkenberg and the lime kilns. The historic lime kilns in Keramag/Falkenberg are an exceptional industrial monument and part of the Regional Park Trail.

For a longer outing, the almost 15-kilometer Flörsheim circular hiking trail runs from the banks of the Main across the floodplain, past the Opel Bridge, the lime kilns and the Iron Tower, to the Flörsheim lookout tower and onward to the sulfur spring in Bad Weilbach. A shorter option is the five-kilometer Weilbach circular hiking trail, which passes, among other places, the House of the Poet and the Schnecken-Hügel viewing bastion. This makes it easy to distinguish the route lengths when planning, without confusing the different circular trails.

The Upper Rheingau Wine Experience Trail, among others, starts in Wicker. Its main route is around 18 kilometers long and features 40 stations with information on geology, climate, history, wine and the region’s winegrowers. The Wicker Wine Trail starts at the “Gateway to the Rheingau” on Taunusstraße. It passes the König-Wilhelmsberg and Nonnberg vineyards and the Flörsheim lookout tower before returning to its starting point.

A digital town tour also explores Flörsheim’s Old Town: using a smartphone, it takes visitors to 15 selected sites and can help with navigation from one stop to the next via Google Maps. Check in advance whether the app and map link are currently available.

Parks, views and wine

Flörsheimer Schweiz is a local recreation area where natural beauty and public artworks come together. The “Iron Tree” is one of these artworks. At the eastern end of the Old Town lies the town garden. In Weilbach, the Regional Park Tower has offered panoramic views since 2012.

With its springs, Bad Weilbach Spa Park is a place for local recreation. Along its northern edge, the Regional Park Trail follows a fallow deer enclosure maintained by the town. The House of the Poet in Weilbach is a shelter surrounded by ginkgo trees, where visitors can rest and linger, as well as engage with literature and poetry.

The wine tasting stand on the Flörsheim Main embankment offers a place to take a break. Tastings of Flörsheim and Wicker wines are held there on weekends and public holidays during the warmer months. Check the current opening days before you travel. This lets you combine a break with a seasonal wine offering without planning a visit outside the times stated.

Culture and recurring events

The Day of the Betrothed is celebrated each year on the last Monday in August with a festive procession through the lanes of the Old Town. Flörsheim’s carnival includes both indoor events and street celebrations; each year, it attracts thousands of visitors from across the region. The Bad Weilbach Fountain Festival is held annually in Bad Weilbach Spa Park over the Whitsun weekend. When planning, it is worth checking the program and date for the year in question.

The Flörsheim Cellar is a venue for cabaret and comedy; check the current program before planning a visit. The different options – the Old Town and its history, routes of varying lengths, public art and recurring cultural events – can help you choose Flörsheim am Main to suit the purpose of your trip.
