Wicker: Winegrowing, Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Wicker
Wicker brings together winegrowing, historic village structures and trails through vineyards and along the stream. Different priorities may influence your choice of destination: wine tradition, a walk or outdoor culture. If you are looking for a hotel, first consider whether tastings, trails, or historic and artistic sites are especially important for your stay.
Winegrowing and seasonal tastings
Wicker is known for its wine in the Rheingau wine-growing region. Seasonal tastings of Wicker and Flörsheim wines are offered at the wine-tasting stand. Numerous traditional wine taverns round out the local offerings with wine and hearty food. Together, the Wicker and Flörsheim vineyards cover around 83 hectares; Riesling and Pinot Noir are the main varieties grown there. The combined vineyard area and the two grape varieties give an idea of how strongly winegrowing shapes the area.
The Wicker Wine Festival is also part of the wine tradition: for over 50 years, it has been held on the first weekend in August in the historic village center around the “Gateway to the Rheingau.” Tastings at the wine-tasting stand are seasonal; check current dates and visitor information when planning your trip.
Hiking trails with different highlights
The approximately four-kilometer Wicker circular trail begins and ends at St. Katharina Church. Along the way, it passes the Nonnberg vineyard and old millstones, crosses the Wickerbach stream, and then runs through the Wicker vineyards. Its circular route, with the same starting and ending point, sets it apart from the Wicker Wine Trail: this trail starts at the “Gateway to the Rheingau” on Taunusstraße and leads through the König-Wilhelmsberg and Nonnberg vineyards via Otto-Schwabe-Ruhe to the Flörsheimer Warte.
Another option is the Upper Rheingau Wine Experience Trail, which begins, among other places, in Wicker. Its main route is around 18 kilometers long. The 40 stops cover the region’s geology and climate, historical events, wine and the people who make it. The options range from a local circular hike to a trail through named vineyards and a longer route with themed information stops.
Stream landscape, art and views
A trail through the Wickerbach floodplain passes through a varied cultural landscape of orchard meadows, vineyards and natural streamside areas. The Mill Wheel sculpture stands in this area near Flörsheim-Wicker. It references the approximately 20 mills that operated along the Wickerbach from the 14th century onward, connecting the landscape with its milling history.
Outdoor art is also part of what the surrounding area has to offer. Along the sculpture trail between the Flörsheim districts of Wicker and Weilbach, five monumental stone sculptures stand along the Panoramaweg over a stretch of around 800 meters. The Vine Arbor Walk, in turn, is part of the Regional Park circular route. It begins right on the edge of Wicker and leads through the vineyards toward the Flörsheimer Warte; a Roman wine relief is located at the rest area in the “Herrnberg” vineyard.
The Flörsheimer Warte stands on Geißberg above the Wicker vineyards. It was originally part of the Kastel Landwehr in the 15th century. The site includes a vineyard garden; the Flörsheimer Warte offers panoramic views across the Main valley, the Frankfurt skyline, the Taunus and the Rheinhessen hills. If visiting the vineyard garden is important to your plans, check the latest visitor information in advance.
Historic village center and other interests
The protected historic center of Wicker preserves a historic street layout and farm complexes that shape the village’s appearance. It extends to the Catholic parish church of St. Katharina. The village center therefore offers a different way to explore history than the Mill Wheel sculpture or the Flörsheimer Warte: here, the focus is on the streetscape and farm complexes, while those sites highlight the mills along the stream and the former defensive line, respectively.
For amateur climbers, the climbing facility at the biomass power plant in Wicker is also a popular destination. Wine tastings, trails through vineyards, outdoor art and local history thus offer different considerations when choosing a trip.
