When considering Calau as a destination, distinguishing between the specific attractions in the town and the wider district context can help with planning.
City history and architecture in Calau
The town of Calau inaugurated the Witzerundweg in 2011. A guided tour through the town passes, among other places, the Evangelical Town Church and the town hall, and introduces visitors to the town’s eventful history. The Town Church is late Gothic and has three naves; its construction is dated to before 1400. “Three-nave” describes the division of the church interior into three naves and adds a specific architectural detail to the reference to its style.
The Wendish Church, also known as the Land Church, has had its present appearance since 1666. For this church, the date refers to its present appearance; for the Town Church, it dates the start of construction. The local history museum is housed in the former girls’ school, a half-timbered house dating from 1789, directly next to the Town Church. Its former use, half-timbered construction and year of construction give the museum location its own historical context.
The Calau Local History Association (Heimatverein Calau e.V.) regularly presents themed special exhibitions at the House of Local History. If you are planning to climb to the Town Church’s viewing platform, check current access arrangements in advance.
Route and outdoor adventure pool
A 14-kilometre cycling and hiking route leads from Calau railway station towards Plieskendorf. It passes the Weinberg and climbs towards the “Hölle”, a valley formed by erosion with near-natural vegetation and several springs. The distance refers to the entire route; the Weinberg and the valley are named points along the way.
Calau’s outdoor adventure pool has one pool each for swimmers, non-swimmers and young children, as well as a large water slide and a mushroom fountain. It operates seasonally. If you are planning a visit to the pool, check in advance that it will be open during your stay. Swimming and the cycling and hiking route are two different local activities to consider, depending on your travel plans.
