Hermsdorf offers three themes to help you plan your trip: wetlands, historic buildings and cycling connections. If you are looking for a hotel in Hermsdorf, you can plan your stay around whether nature, architecture or cycling is your main focus.

Wetlands around Hermsdorf

The area shared by Hermsdorf, Lipsa and Jannowitz is characterized by meadows, forests and ponds. The Schwarzwasser Nature Reserve near Lipsa is a specific example of the area’s natural features. It protects a diverse wetland landscape with a near-natural stream, oxbow lakes and remnants of ponds, as well as reed beds, wet heaths, wet meadows and near-natural forests. The protected area covers about 26 hectares in the Hermsdorf district of Lipsa.

Wuppen, an 11-hectare spring and pond area, also lies between Hermsdorf and Lipsa. A report dated January 15, 2019, describes the area as a habitat for endangered amphibians. Wuppen is designated as a nature reserve in the district of Oberspreewald-Lausitz. The name is therefore associated with a protected area of its own and a landscape where springs, ponds and amphibians are key features.

Village church and castle ensemble

The village church of Hermsdorf at Jannowitzer Straße 1 is a late-medieval fieldstone hall church with a three-sided east end. As of January 1, 2026, it is listed as a protected monument in Brandenburg under monument ID 09120227.

Another protected-monument address is the castle ensemble at Jannowitzer Weg 1 in Lipsa, Hermsdorf. As of January 1, 2026, it is listed in Brandenburg under ID 09120226. The ensemble includes a gatehouse, a rent office, an outbuilding and the castle park. The two protected-monument sites offer different architectural features: a late-medieval church on the one hand, and a multi-part ensemble with a park on the other. Lipsa Castle is considered a local attraction. Check whether access is possible before visiting.

Cycling and the wider region

Hermsdorf is connected to the central cycle route network. The local cycle network links the town with the Lusatian Lakeland. In the south of the district of Oberspreewald-Lausitz, the flooding of former open-cast mines is creating a waterscape with more than 20 artificial lakes: the Lusatian Lakeland. This connects local cycling routes with a wider landscape across the district.

The district of Oberspreewald-Lausitz has hiking routes ranging from 4 to 32 kilometers. This range provides a regional point of comparison for planning: both shorter routes and longer hikes are part of the district’s offerings. For cycle touring, there are routes of 40 kilometers or more, including independent or guided multi-day tours with good places to rest and eat.

More than 580 kilometers of signposted cycle routes connect the regions between the Spreewald and the Kmehlener Berge, and link southern Brandenburg with Saxony and northern Brandenburg.
