Großräschen: Culture and landscape by the lake
Accommodation in Großräschen
Großräschen is a lakeside town in the Lusatian Lake District. A stay here can be shaped by very different interests: mining and local history, the vineyard and its views, cycling, or time by the lake. If you are looking for a hotel in Großräschen, first consider which of these sides of the town you want to shape your stay.
Explore local history and culture
The Kurmärker is Großräschen’s oldest building and was constructed in 1781. It is also a cultural centre, hosting theatre, dance evenings, musicals, concerts, talks, exhibitions and trade fairs. You can check separately which events are taking place during your stay; the range of formats makes the Kurmärker a destination for a variety of cultural interests.
The IBA Terraces also reflect the region’s history. The complex consists of three minimalist cube-shaped buildings connected by terraces and is presented as a reflection on nature, culture and mining. The exhibition “12 Questions – 12 Answers” covers Großräschen’s mining and brickmaking traditions, as well as its transformation from a former site for repairing large mining machinery into a harbour. The visitor centre is currently closed for renovation.
In Dörrwalde, a district of Großräschen, you will find a Dutch windmill, historic farmsteads, a renovated blacksmith’s workshop, a village church and a local history room offering further insights into local history. The windmill is used as a restaurant and event venue. Großräschen therefore brings together several different historical landmarks: its oldest building, its mining history and the buildings in the district of Dörrwalde.
Views and traces of mining
From Victoriahöhe, you can enjoy views of Großräschener See, the vineyard, the Avenue of Stones and Großräschen. A ship-shaped steel viewing platform has stood there since 2007. The Avenue of Stones offers a different perspective: mining boulders and selected trees are arranged there as a field of stones, in groups, in a circle and as individual stone pillars. You can experience the views and these designed forms as two different ways of engaging with the landscape and its mining history.
Cycling and the vineyard
There are two differently described options for a cycling trip. The “From Miner to Sailor” route starts and ends at the IBA Terraces. It runs mainly along paved cycle paths, with a few sections on side roads or compacted gravel, and is mostly flat. The 17-kilometre Großräschen Lake Cycle Circuit has its recommended start and finish at the Großräschen town harbour; its surface is paved and the route is hilly. The comparison is useful: one ride is described as mostly flat, while the other is hilly.
The vineyard can also be included in your visit. The operator of the IBA Terraces offers guided vineyard walks, with information from winemakers and tastings of Großräschen wine. If this sounds interesting for your stay, check the dates in advance.
By the lake and planning your stay
Swimming is permitted at the designated beach on Großräschener See. The beach is unguarded, and use is at your own risk. As beach access and swimming rules may change, check the current local bathing regulations before swimming.
The tourist information office in Großräschen sells regional products, cycling and hiking maps, and souvenirs. It also organises town tours and day programmes. Maps can help you find your way by bike or on foot; if you are interested in a tour or day programme, ask about the dates. This lets you give different emphasis to culture, cycling and time by the lake when planning your stay, while keeping in mind the specific conditions for beach visits and events.
