Altdöbern has historical landmarks in the town, while nearby destinations lie along lakes. The wider travel destination of Oberspreewald-Lausitz complements the town and surrounding area with cycling and hiking routes across the district.

Church, castle and local history

The Protestant church stands on Altdöbern’s market square and was built in 1285. Its year of construction marks an early historical landmark. Another focal point is Altdöbern Castle and Park: the grounds include a garden designed in the French style. It dates from the period when Carl Heinrich von Heineken had the castle remodelled in the Rococo style. The town’s cultural heritage can therefore be viewed through two distinct themes: the church’s construction and garden design associated with the Rococo remodelling.

Altdöbern’s outdoor swimming pool also has a historical connection. It was built in 1895 as a bathing facility for men. This original purpose is part of the pool’s history and adds another aspect of local history to the themes of architecture and garden design.

Lakes and paths in the nearby area

The natural bathing beach “Gräbendorfer Strand” lies nearby on the Altdöbern shore of Lake Gräbendorfer. It is located in Reddern, a district of Altdöbern, and therefore outside the town of Altdöbern itself. The beach is ideal for swimming and sunbathing. An approximately ten-kilometre-long paved circular path also runs nearby around Lake Gräbendorfer. It is suitable for cycling, inline skating or walking. This offers two distinct ways to enjoy the same lake: relaxing at the natural bathing beach and getting active on the circular path.

A paved service road operated by LMBV runs along the southern shore of Lake Altdöberner. It is suitable for cycling and offers views of the lake. The lake is still undergoing recultivation and flooding; conditions and access may change. If you plan to cycle along this road, check the conditions and access shortly before your visit.

The wider area: Oberspreewald-Lausitz

In the south of the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district, the flooding of former open-cast mines is creating a waterscape with more than 20 artificial lakes: the Lusatian Lake District. This development describes the wider landscape of the district and is distinct from the immediate surroundings of the paths and lakes mentioned above.

The hiking routes and cycle paths also belong to the wider travel destination of Oberspreewald-Lausitz. The district has hiking routes between four and 32 kilometres long. Cycle routes start at 40 kilometres; they include individual or guided multi-day tours with good places to rest and eat along the way. More than 580 kilometres of signposted cycle paths connect the regions between the Spreewald and the Kmehlener Berge, linking southern Brandenburg with Saxony and northern Brandenburg across regional boundaries. These distances represent a different scale from the approximately ten-kilometre circular path around Lake Gräbendorfer or the service road by Lake Altdöberner.

For trip planning, it is therefore helpful to distinguish between Altdöbern’s historic buildings and local history, individual destinations by nearby lakes, and the longer routes in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district.
