The destinations described differ in scale and offer various starting points for planning your trip.

Viewpoints and mining trails

From the Schipkau rooftop balcony, you can look southeast towards the Kamenz Hills. The named elevations include Hutberg and Hennersdorfer Berg. The view thus extends across a landscape reaching beyond the immediate viewpoint.

In the municipality of Schipkau, the observation tower stands in the district of Hörlitz. From the 27-metre-high steel tower, the panoramic view stretches across Hörlitz and Senftenberg, the EuroSpeedway Lausitz and the post-mining landscape of the former Meuro open-cast mine, as far as the Saxon uplands. The structure is intended to recall the former water tower. The view and the design give this spot two distinct themes: a wide-ranging panorama and a reminder of a former use.

Two long-distance routes also pass through the municipality, but they have different focuses. The Niederlausitzer Bergbautour is about 510 kilometres long. The Fürst-Pückler-Weg runs for more than 500 kilometres through the history of the Lausitz and also passes through the municipality of Schipkau. The similar distances therefore refer to different routes. In 2006, the Fürst-Pückler-Weg was awarded four stars by the ADFC (German Cyclists’ Association).

The cycling and hiking trails at Lake Drochow offer another way to enjoy a stay by the water. This brings activities connected with a specific lakeside stay into focus alongside the longer routes.

Klettwitz Church: renovation, ceiling and organ

A particularly striking feature of Klettwitz Church is its 1906 faux coffered ceiling, with 91 different motifs. Its elaborate design makes the ceiling a distinctive detail of the church. From 1905 to 1907, the building underwent extensive renovation and expansion based on designs by Berlin architect Wilhelm Blaue and government building surveyor Carl Weber.

A stone chapel has also been preserved and serves as an entrance hall. On the organ loft is the 970th organ built by the royal court organ builder Wilhelm Sauer of Frankfurt/Oder; it has twelve stops. Together, the renovation, ceiling, chapel and organ offer various architectural and musical points of interest. The information about the organ identifies not only its builder but also its place in his body of work and its number of stops.

The wider destination of Oberspreewald-Lausitz

The wider destination of Oberspreewald-Lausitz adds a regional perspective. In the south of the district, the flooding of former open-cast mines is creating a water landscape with more than 20 artificial lakes: the Lusatian Lake District. Across the district, hiking routes range from four to 32 kilometres. Cycle touring routes start at 40 kilometres and include individual or guided multi-day tours with good places to stop and eat.

More than 580 kilometres of signposted cycle touring routes connect the regions between the Spreewald and the Kmehlener Berge. At a regional level, they link southern Brandenburg with Saxony and northern Brandenburg. This offers a different scale from the individual viewpoints and places: the cycle routes form a network spanning several regions. Cultural attractions also feature in the wider district. The historic old town of LĂĽbbenau/Spreewald includes a neoclassical palace ensemble.

If you are looking for a hotel in Schipkau, you can take these different scales into account when planning your trip: the viewpoints and church are specific named places, while the long-distance routes and attractions in Oberspreewald-Lausitz encompass larger regional areas.
