Mössingen: Hiking, Geology and Town History
Accommodation in Mössingen
When looking for a hotel in Mössingen, it helps to decide what you want to focus on first when planning your trip: Would you like to go hiking, explore geology or discover places connected to the town’s history? Mössingen’s attractions range from the landscape around Hirschkopf and the Dreifürstensteig trail to museums, exhibitions and activities related to traditional orchards.
Landslide and nature at Hirschkopf
The landslide at Hirschkopf is a defining geological event in the area. It occurred on 12 April 1983. Around 50 hectares were affected; a total of 5 to 6 million cubic metres of earth and rubble slid into the valley. The figures describe different aspects: since 1988, 39 hectares of the landslide area have been designated a nature reserve. It is also one of Germany’s National Geotopes. In the years following the landslide, an impressive new flora and fauna developed.
Hiking the Dreifürstensteig trail
The premium hiking trail “Dreifürstensteig” is just over 13 kilometres long. The route passes through traditional orchards to a viewpoint with sweeping vistas, including views of Hohenzollern. The distance and scenery give the hike a distinctive character: the trail combines a longer route, orchards and a viewpoint as its destination. Parking areas for the Dreifürstensteig trail are at Olgahöhe, Buch car park, Hirschkopf car park and Linden car park.
Town history and culture
In Mössingen’s old town centre, the Kulturscheune hosts changing exhibitions on the town’s history. They draw on a collection of around 30,000 exhibits. The converted barn also regularly hosts cultural events. Café Chamäleon serves homemade cakes and other local specialities. Check the event schedule and current café opening arrangements before your visit.
The former Pausa textile printing works are a remarkable monument to Württemberg’s design and industrial history. The Pausa archive preserves graphic fabric designs and fabric samples by Willi Baumeister and HAP Grieshaber. St Peter and St Paul’s Church tells a different story: built between 1517 and 1527, it is now Mössingen’s oldest church. It is home to the 1820 Weimer organ, which is known for its excellent sound. The Historical Cutlery Forge Museum also has its own historical origins. It was established in April 2005 following the careful restoration of a 16th-century building and its historic workshop.
Discover and experience traditional orchards
Mössingen’s traditional orchard information centre is dedicated to orchards, with an exhibition and hands-on stations. The Obstwerkstatt is right next door. It offers numerous courses for children and adults on baking, cooking and drying using materials from the traditional orchard. Groups can also book guided tours that include a walk; tastings of products from the orchards are available as an option. Details of group activities may vary.
More activities to help plan your trip
