Stetten am kalten Markt: Hiking and History
Accommodation in Stetten Am Kalten Markt
Stetten am kalten Markt is located on the Heuberg plateau between the Danube and Schmeie valleys and within the Upper Danube Nature Park. When choosing where to stay, the main attractions are hiking trails through the landscape and sites of local and religious history. A ski lift and cross-country ski trails also offer seasonal activities in winter.
Hiking Trails and Different Destinations
There are several possible starting points for hikes: the town center, the “zum Kreuz” inn, the cemetery, and Steighöfe. Information boards and parking facilities help with planning your tours. A nature trail runs along the escarpment, passes the Stetten shelter, and continues to Schaufelsen. This is considered the highest rock face in the Danube Valley. If you are interested in nature trails and rocky landscapes, this route combines both in a single trail.
Another route follows the Schmeie through open woodland and reaches the Frohnstetten hut after about 3 km from Storzingen. A different hike leads to Falkenstein Castle ruins after around 2 km; there is a barbecue area there. The distances refer to different routes and destinations, not walking times. As a rough guide, you can compare the roughly 3 km from Storzingen to the hut with the approximately 2 km to the ruins. The described routes also differ in their scenery: one focuses on the Schmeie and open woodland, while the other takes in the escarpment, shelter, and Schaufelsen.
Building History, Chapel, and Carnival
The historical tour includes the town hall—the former castle of Stetten am kalten Markt—and St. Mauritius Parish Church. The church was rebuilt in 1624, while its tower, dating from 1275, was preserved. The church thus brings together two periods of construction: the older tower and the later church building. The tour offers a different perspective on the town from the trails through the countryside and takes you to specific sites connected with its architectural history.
Another historical site is the Drei-Tritten Chapel. Built in the 17th century, it is surrounded by 15 Stations of the Cross. The chapel is associated with a memorial to soldiers of Panzer Brigade 29 who died in service. A local legend links three footprints in the rock to the origins of the pilgrimage site. The chapel’s architecture, commemoration, and lore each give it a distinct historical and cultural significance.
The Bockzunft is also an important part of local tradition and Swabian-Alemannic Carnival. It adds a custom associated with the town’s carnival celebrations to its religious and historical sites.
Winter Activities and Getting There
A ski lift and cross-country ski trails add to the range of winter activities. As these are seasonal offerings, it is a good idea to check their availability before your trip. Stetten am kalten Markt can be reached via the B 463 and Deutsche Bundesbahn rail services. These travel options provide a starting point for planning your stay; when choosing a hotel, you can then consider the focus of your trip.
