Bühl combines its location in the Neckar Valley with a Renaissance castle, an annual Fasnet tradition and special features at St. Pancras Church. The Bühlertal stream also shapes the townscape. These varied themes give you specific points to consider when planning your trip—from architecture and ecclesiastical art to customs and nature.

Bühl in the Neckar Valley and Wurmlingen Chapel

Bühl lies in the Neckar Valley opposite Wurmlingen Chapel, about six kilometers southwest of Tübingen and about four kilometers east of Rottenburg. The present-day chapel was built as a hall church in 1680; its Romanesque crypt dates from the early 12th century. There are circular hiking trails around the chapel, the Wurmlingen Chapel nature trail and a wine trail. This means the surrounding area brings together architectural history and several themed trails.

Bühl Castle and St. Pancras Church

Bühl Castle is a Renaissance castle. David von Stein built it in 1554. Alongside the landscape, this clearly identified historic building is a focal point of the town’s history. If you are interested in architecture, its Renaissance style and year of construction offer specific points of reference for understanding the castle.

St. Pancras Church also offers several distinctive details of artistic and architectural history. The octagonal tower with its onion dome, dating from the former church building, has been preserved; Peter Lang built it in 1599. The church also houses a valuable late Gothic Madonna and Child from Ulm, dated to around 1510 to 1520. The tower and sculpture represent different periods and make the church a subject of interest for both architecture and art enthusiasts. Concerts are regularly held under the heading “Music at St. Pancras.” If you would like to include a concert in your travel plans, check the specific date for your travel dates.

Fasnet and the Bühlertal stream

Every year during Fasnet, the traditional Narrensprung takes place from the old bridge, the “steinere Brückle,” into the Bühlertal stream. The custom is therefore tied to a particular time of year and a named location. If the Narrensprung is a key reason for your trip, check the date for the relevant year before planning your stay.

The clear, clean Bühlertal stream is still home to its original fauna: brown trout, bullhead and the now extremely rare brook lamprey. The stream is therefore not only the setting for the Narrensprung, but also a natural attraction in its own right. These species give the stream a specific ecological dimension, while the castle and church are Bühl’s cultural highlights.

This lets you take both of these transport links into account without relying on departure times or a specific route that have not been provided.

More to explore in the wider Tübingen destination

The wider Tübingen destination offers additional cultural and nature attractions in their own right. The Museum of Ancient Cultures in Hohentübingen Castle presents, among other things, humanity’s oldest works of art, including Ice Age art listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The City Museum in the former granary in Tübingen’s Old Town hosts changing exhibitions on the city’s history and current development. There are also two permanent exhibitions: one on the city’s history and one on the silhouette artist Lotte Reiniger. Regular events and museum education programs for children and young people round out the program.

The University of Tübingen Botanical Garden covers ten hectares and is home to almost 10,000 plant species from around the world. Its collections are organized according to geographical, ecological and taxonomic criteria and are complemented by areas such as a medicinal herb garden, a traditional kitchen garden and ornamental perennial beds. A circular route of about 0.75 kilometers can be followed along wide paths without steps.
