Nehren combines a protected historic half-timbered town centre with St. Vitus Church and the theme of traditional orchards. When planning a stay, you can choose from several focuses: architectural history in the townscape, a tour through the orchard landscape, or activities related to Hans Vaihinger and wood-fired oven bread.

Half-timbered houses and St. Vitus Church in the townscape

The protected historic town centre is characterised by charming half-timbered houses. Nehren is considered a half-timbered village in the Swabian Orchard Paradise; the half-timbered houses give the town centre its distinctive architectural character. A prominent landmark is the late Gothic St. Vitus Church. It was built in 1430 with a choir closed on three sides, a nave of the same width, and a separate bell tower on the north side of the choir. This description makes the church’s layout clear: the choir, nave and tower are identified as distinct parts of the building.

The history of exposing the half-timbering is also visible in the townscape: since the tower’s half-timbering was exposed in 1980, it can once again be seen from far away and is regarded as Nehren’s landmark. The town centre and church thus offer two different ways to explore architectural history: the focus for the houses is the half-timbered ensemble, while at St. Vitus Church you can observe its late Gothic design and the position of the bell tower.

Orchard landscape and tour

The orchard tour passes through Nehren and by traditional orchards, cider presses, distilleries and farm shops. It offers an up-close experience of the orchard theme. The landscape and its produce are both part of the experience: the meadows define the orchard landscape, while the cider presses and distilleries highlight processing, and the farm shops add sales as another aspect of the route. The tour is therefore a distinct focus alongside the half-timbered architecture of the town centre.

This distinction is useful when planning: St. Vitus Church and the half-timbered houses draw attention to the town’s built history, while the orchard tour focuses on a cultural landscape and the places it passes. The route runs through Nehren; this does not imply that specific visits to the businesses mentioned are available.

Children’s literature tour and wood-fired oven bread

The Children’s Literature Tour in Nehren focuses on Hans Vaihinger and has been running since 2013. Collectible sticker no. 4 for the tour is available at the town hall, at Klett Schokolade and at the Nehrener Hof. As the collection points may change, check the current options before travelling. The tour adds a literary focus alongside the architectural and landscape themes.

Another opportunity to take part is offered by the wood-fired oven at the Nehren community centre: anyone interested can bake wood-fired oven bread there themselves after registering. Participation requires registration; check availability in advance with NEHREN AKTIV. The activities also differ in format: the orchard tour goes through the landscape, the Children’s Literature Tour focuses on Hans Vaihinger, and bread-making is an activity that requires registration.

A wider look at TĂĽbingen

The wider Tübingen travel destination offers its own landscape setting in Tübingen district: it stretches between the Schönbuch Nature Park, with its many forests and valleys, in the north and the Alb escarpment in the south. The Neckar, Ammer and Steinlach rivers have cut through the district’s cuesta landscape, creating a varied region. Its scenery includes the wooded areas of the Rammert and Schönbuch Nature Park, high plateaus with sweeping views, traditional orchards and vineyards.

Cultural themes add to this regional perspective. Within the wider TĂĽbingen travel destination, the Museum of Ancient Cultures at HohentĂĽbingen Castle is another cultural attraction: it is the only university museum in the world with exhibits from two UNESCO World Heritage inscriptions. It displays figurative artworks dating back 40,000 years as well as the oldest musical instruments. In Nehren itself, the focus is instead on the protected historic half-timbered town centre, St. Vitus Church and the orchard tour.
