Ammerbuch: Landscapes and Cultural History
Accommodation in Ammerbuch
Landscapes, routes and local highlights
Ammerbuch offers several distinct landscape and cultural themes to consider when planning a trip. The Schönbuch and the Ammertal valley are among the landscapes that are particularly showcased to visitors. Other prominent attractions include the airfield, orchards and vineyards. This combination draws attention to both the landscape and specific local highlights. If you choose a destination based on its themes, you can weigh up landscape experiences, architectural history and other named attractions here.
In spring 2018, two routes in Ammerbuch were added to the FrĂĽchtetrauf network of premium hiking and walking routes. If you are planning a specific route, it is a good idea to check the latest route information.
Hohenentringen Castle and the Cultural Route
Hohenentringen Castle is located above Entringen. The elongated, three-storey stone building with a hipped roof dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. A hipped roof has sloping roof surfaces at the gable ends as well, which describes its shape precisely. From the castle courtyard, the view extends across Ammerbuch and the Upper Gäu as far as the Black Forest. The architecture and the view offer two different points of interest: the building’s form and date place it in context, while the view opens up a broad geographical perspective.
Another cultural connection, with a different focus, is the Heinrich Schickhardt European Cultural Route. Ammerbuch has been part of this Council of Europe-recognised Cultural Route since 2021. The route links significant places associated with the life and work of the Renaissance master builder. Hohenentringen Castle and the Cultural Route raise different cultural questions: the focus here is on a specific building and its architecture, while the route explores the life and work of Heinrich Schickhardt.
A regional view of TĂĽbingen
In the wider Tübingen destination, Tübingen district stretches from the Schönbuch Nature Park, rich in forests and valleys, in the north to the Albtrauf escarpment in the south. The Neckar, Ammer and Steinlach rivers have cut through the district’s cuesta landscape, creating a varied area. Tübingen’s historic old town is characterised by half-timbered houses and narrow lanes, and invites visitors to stroll around.
In the wider TĂĽbingen destination, the Museum of Ancient Cultures at HohentĂĽbingen Castle displays figurative artworks dating back 40,000 years, as well as the oldest musical instruments. The Keltermuseum Unterjesingen offers a different kind of cultural-historical collection: it features an extensive collection of equipment and objects relating to wine and hop growing, as well as farming and domestic life, dating from the 19th century onwards. The two museums differ in their collection focus: early figurative art and musical instruments at one, and equipment and objects from several areas of economic activity at the other.
In the wider TĂĽbingen destination, the interiors of Bebenhausen Palace can only be visited as part of a guided tour. The tours cover Cistercian monastic architecture and the everyday lives of the monks and the royal couple. Check dates and availability before your trip.
