Discover Starzach: Hiking and History
Accommodation in Starzach
Explore Starzach through its hiking routes, the Neckar Nature Trail and local history. If you are planning a stay, trail lengths offer a practical guide to choosing the hike you want; cycling and cultural themes provide other points of interest. You can start by deciding whether the route itself, its waypoints or historical sites matter most to you.
Hiking routes of different lengths
The municipal route guide, dated July 2023, lists nine designated hiking routes around Starzach, shown on a total of five trail boards. They range from the 5.4-kilometre “Zum Ammelesbrunnen” to the ten-kilometre “Große Höhenrunde.” Other shorter options include the 5.7-kilometre “Panoramarunde zu den Feldkreuzen” and “Rund um Felldorf,” at 5.8 kilometres. Longer routes include “Von Wachendorf ins Starzeltal,” at 9.3 kilometres, and “Von der Wilhelmshöhe ins Neckartal,” at 9.8 kilometres. The distances offer a direct way to compare shorter and longer hikes. Since the municipal guide is dated July 2023, check the latest route description before setting out on a specific hike.
The waypoints also set the routes apart: “Rund um Bierlingen” is 6.6 kilometres long and passes the forest chapel, Hummelberg, the panoramic trail and St. Martinus. “Zum Ammelesbrunnen” goes via Härle and the municipal forest to Ammelesbrunnen and the forest chapel. The 5.8-kilometre loop around Felldorf passes Mühringer Talblick and Doline Hebsack. “Schwäbisches Sauerland” is 7.2 kilometres long and passes the Lohmühle hiking car park and Eyach station. The 7.5-kilometre “Sulzau und die Ruine Siegburg” route passes the Neckar bridge, Bieringen cemetery chapel and Eulental spring. “Von Wachendorf ins Starzeltal” passes Wachendorf Castle and goes through the Starzeltal; “Von der Wilhelmshöhe ins Neckartal” passes, among other places, the village museum “Kulturtankstelle.” The ten-kilometre “Große Höhenrunde” runs through the municipal forest and passes Ammelesbrunnen.
Nature, river and activity
The Neckar Nature Trail near Starzach-Börstingen offers a different focus from the hiking routes with their stated distances: eight stations, some of them interactive, explore the river ecosystem and the formation of the Neckar Valley landscape. The trail also features themed play opportunities for children and places to sit. Nature topics and stations are the focus here, while the other routes are distinguished mainly by their length and waypoints.
The Neckar Valley Cycle Route runs through the centre of Starzach. The Golf Club Schloss Weitenburg is also located in the Neckar Valley near Sulzau. These offer further points of interest if you would like to include cycling or the local connection to golf in your travel plans, alongside hiking routes.
Historic sites and museums
Wachendorf Castle offers a dated reference point for the history of its construction: the Old Castle was built around 1500; the gatehouse and New Castle were added in 1555. The “Von Wachendorf ins Starzeltal” route passes the castle. This lets you combine your choice of trail with a specific historical site, without implying that the building is open to visitors.
Only a remnant of the wall and part of the moat remain of Siegburg Castle. The fortification was probably built in the 11th century and destroyed soon afterwards. The Börstingen village museum focuses on the history of the place, including the Swabian Sauerbrunnen spring and rafting on the Neckar. A municipal description dated 19 September 2024 identifies the Swabian-Alemannic Miniature Mäskle Museum in Bierlingen as home to the world’s largest collection of small Fasnet masks and puts its holdings at more than 5,569 miniatures.
Historical themes and different landscapes add to the choice of hiking routes. When looking for accommodation in Starzach, you can use the trails and cultural themes that interest you as a guide to planning your stay.
