Gomaringen is nestled in the Wiesaz Valley. Two different focal points can help you plan a stay: the history of the castle and Gustav Schwab, and trails through the landscape. The Castle and Gustav Schwab Museum offers insights into local history and a biographical perspective; outdoors, loop trails and a literary cycling route provide separate options for planning your day.

Castle History and Gustav Schwab

Since 1998, members of the Gomaringen History and Antiquities Society (Geschichts- und Altertumsverein Gomaringen e.V.) have operated the Castle and Gustav Schwab Museum at Gomaringen Castle. The exhibition rooms are in the oldest part of the castle, dating from the 14th century. A permanent exhibition presents many details about life and work in Gomaringen in the 18th and 19th centuries. Guided tours of the exhibition “Everyday Life in Gomaringen in the 18th and 19th Centuries” share insights into the working lives of Gomaringen’s residents.

Gustav Schwab lived and worked at the castle during his time in Gomaringen. From 1837 to 1841, he was a pastor and spiritual adviser in Gomaringen; the castle continued to be used as a rectory until 1993. These dates reflect two different historical connections to the building: Schwab’s work there and its later use as a rectory.

Schwab’s travels are also covered in the exhibition. Visitors can trace his hikes on a map of Württemberg. A touchscreen provides access to travel accounts, verses and historical images relating to the places he visited. This travel thread complements local history with impressions of the time Schwab spent on the road.

The museum’s educational program includes historical castle tours, with information about the castle’s history and its former lords. Another offering is the “Village Scavenger Hunt for History Detectives”: it takes primary school pupils in grades 2 to 4 through Gomaringen, where they search for traces of the past by tackling tasks and riddles and finding secret codes and hidden signs. The activity is therefore aimed at a clearly specified grade range.

A stream walk in the museum’s educational program leads to the remains of former mills. It explores how the Wiesaz was used, with explanations of old mills and mill channels, as well as the beginnings of electricity generation. If you plan a museum visit or guided tour, check current visiting options and dates in advance.

Woodland Trails, the Wiesaz Valley and Cycling

The Woodland and Viewpoint Loop is just over 5 km long, clearly signposted throughout, and runs mainly through shady woodland. A winding path follows the meandering Erdmannsbach stream. The elevation gain is a moderate 130 m. Suggested starting points are the car park by the Buchbach recreation area and the Kohlgrube car park. These details about distance, landscape and elevation profile can help you plan your route.

Gomaringen’s network of circular routes comprises six themed trails. Together with the Woodland and Viewpoint Loop, they offer various options if you would like to include walks or hikes in your stay. The surrounding area also has local recreation areas with orchards and woodland, as well as areas along the Albtrauf escarpment. Gomaringen itself lies in the Wiesaz Valley; these recreational areas are in the surrounding area, not features of the town center.

For cyclists, Gomaringen is a stop on Literary Cycling Route No. 6. The circular route is about 50 km long and runs from TĂĽbingen via Reutlingen and Pfullingen to Gomaringen and back to TĂĽbingen. This lets you choose between a local hiking route just over 5 km long and a considerably longer regional cycling route, depending on the kind of outing you have in mind.

The TĂĽbingen Region as an Addition

Tübingen District stretches between Schönbuch Nature Park, with its many forests and valleys, to the north and the Albtrauf escarpment to the south. This broader landscape perspective complements the immediate setting of Gomaringen in the Wiesaz Valley. When planning your trip, you can choose between local highlights—castle, museum and circular trails—and a wider exploration of the district’s landscape.
