Enzkreis: Landscapes, Hiking and Cycling
Accommodation in Enzkreis
Enzkreis lies in the Northern Black Forest region in the heart of Baden-WĂĽrttemberg, between the metropolitan areas of Stuttgart and Karlsruhe; it also surrounds the independent city of Pforzheim. Its landscapes and destinations offer a variety of highlights: vineyards and fields in the northwest, wooded hills in the Stromberg and dense forests in the southwest. First consider what you would most like to do on your trip: hike, explore cycling routes, experience culture or spend time by the water.
Landscapes between Kraichgau and the Northern Black Forest
The northwest of Enzkreis is part of Kraichgau. Fields, meadows and vineyards shape the landscape there. In the Stromberg, wooded hills meet gentle valleys and sunny vineyard slopes. The Heckengäu has a different character: juniper heaths, blackthorn and hedges of hawthorn crisscross its rugged landscape. In the southwest, the Northern Black Forest opens up, with dense fir forests, woodland meadows, broad plateaus and narrow valleys. If you would like to include a variety of landscapes in your trip, Enzkreis offers several clearly distinct areas to explore.
Two nature parks lie within Enzkreis: the Black Forest Central/North Nature Park and the Stromberg-Heuchelberg Nature Park. Both are intended to be developed and maintained as model recreational landscapes, where recreation and the protection of nature and the landscape can be reconciled. The nature parks bring a shared principle to the region’s diverse landscapes: recreation and nature conservation go hand in hand.
Hiking with links to landscape and culture
The signposted panoramic circular hiking trail in Freudenstein-Hohenklingen passes over the hills and through vineyards and woods around the town. Six hiking routes in Enzkreis vary in difficulty and range from 10 to 22 kilometers in length. They run around Knittlingen, Sternenfels, Maulbronn, Ölbronn-Dürrn, Ötisheim, Mühlacker, Kieselbronn, Niefern, Neulingen, Königsbach-Stein and Eisingen. Distance and difficulty offer two concrete points of comparison when choosing a route; check that route details are up to date before setting out.
Some trails also explore historical and cultural themes. The Eppinger Lines Trail is an artistic and historical hiking trail featuring installations between Eppingen and MĂĽhlacker. A section of the Huguenot and Waldensian Trail, a European cultural route recognized by the Council of Europe, also passes through Enzkreis. If you are interested in historical connections while hiking, you can choose between a trail with art installations and a section of a European cultural route. Trail routes may change, so current route information is useful when planning your trip.
Museum, mining history and water
Neuenbürg Castle houses a branch museum of the Baden State Museum. The museum tour begins in the north wing with an immersive theatrical presentation of Wilhelm Hauff’s fairy tale “The Cold Heart.” This unusual opening combines a museum visit with a dramatic interpretation of the fairy tale. The “Frischglück” mine in Neuenbürg is also part of the region’s mining history; it is one of the Northern Black Forest’s historic iron ore mines.
The lake and river offer different kinds of waterside excursions. At the Tiefer See natural swimming lake in Maulbronn, pedal boats and rowboats are available for seasonal trips on the lake; changing rooms, showers and toilets are also provided. As the boating season and operating details may vary, it is advisable to check the latest information before visiting. The Enz flows through Enzkreis from east to west, and canoeing is possible on the river. Check local rules before setting out.
Cycling routes of varying lengths
Several long-distance cycling routes pass through named places in Enzkreis. The 160-kilometer Stromberg-Murr Valley Cycle Route follows the Karlsruhe–Maulbronn–Marbach–Gaildorf route through Maulbronn. The 354-kilometer Württemberg Wine Cycle Route runs via Rottenburg, Esslingen, Mühlacker, Maulbronn, Besigheim and Niederstetten. The Enz Valley Cycle Route follows the 105-kilometer Enzklösterle–Pforzheim–Mühlacker–Vaihingen–Walheim route through Mühlacker.
The Black Forest Central/North Nature Park Cycle Route covers 260 kilometers: it runs via Freudenstadt, the Kinzig Valley, Ortenau, Ettlingen, Straubenhardt and NeuenbĂĽrg, before returning to Freudenstadt. The total distances of 105, 160, 260 and 354 kilometers illustrate the different route lengths; the places listed also offer concrete points of reference when choosing a route.
