Neuenbürg – Castle, Mining and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Neuenbürg
There are three themes to explore on a trip to Neuenbürg: the history of the castle, iron ore mining and routes for cycling and hiking. If you are looking for a hotel, these interests can shape the focus of your stay. The castle and mine represent the cultural and historical side of the area, while cycling and hiking routes offer more options for planning your days.
Neuenbürg Castle: Architectural History and Culture
Neuenbürg Castle is a listed monument. Its present-day wings date from the Renaissance, while the castle’s history goes back to the Middle Ages. This means the same building reflects two historical periods: its medieval origins and the later Renaissance wings that survive today. For a long time, the castle served the Dukes of Württemberg as a border bailiwick.
The castle presents the walk-through theatre experience “The Cold Heart,” which offers insights into the region’s cultural history. The path via Schlosssteige also has historical associations: it passes the late-medieval St. George’s Church. The building’s history, its former function and the theatrical production offer different ways to experience the castle.
Frischglück Mine: Iron Ore Mining Underground
Iron ore mining in the Neuenbürg mining district dates back to Celtic times. Frischglück Mine preserves an authentic picture of mining techniques from past centuries. The guided tour covers three underground levels. A large chamber measures 60 metres across and 30 metres high. The mine thus combines a long history of mining with vivid insights into historic extraction techniques and the scale of the underground space.
Cycling and Hiking Routes for Different Plans
The Enz Valley Cycle Path is signposted throughout and has no significant climbs. Near Neuenbürg, cyclists can temporarily leave the route to visit Neuenbürg Castle and Frischglück Mine. This makes it possible to combine a cycling trip with two cultural and historical attractions. Check the signs before setting off.
If you prefer to explore on foot, you can include the jointly established Wilhelm Ganzhorn Trail in your plans. It connects Neuenbürg with Straubenhardt. In Straubenhardt, you can walk the trail as a circular route or continue on to Neuenbürg. This gives you several types of tour to choose from: the Enz Valley Cycle Path, with detours to the castle and mine, and a hiking trail with the option of a loop or continuing onward.
The Eyach Valley and Finding Your Way Around
The nearby Eyach Valley is used for hiking and cycling. Between Höfen and Neuenbürg, the Eyach flows into the Enz, making this confluence a clear point of reference when finding your way around the area. The Eyach nature reserve is also of interest for exploring the outdoors.
