Ötisheim between Waldensian history and hiking trails
Accommodation in Ötisheim
Ötisheim lies on the foothills of the Stromberg and combines a rich local history with opportunities for long walks and bike rides. When planning a stay, you can focus on two themes: Waldensian history and its named sites, or trails that feature cultural and historical landmarks.
Waldensian history and architectural heritage
The Pfleghof was built before 1692 as the Maulbronn Monastery’s financial office for Ötisheim, Lomersheim, Dürrmenz, Mühlhausen, Kieselbronn, Enzberg and Mühlacker. Its links to several places make it a starting point for exploring the monastery’s regional administrative and economic history.
The Henri-Arnaud House was built in 1701 as Henri Arnaud’s residence. It houses collections and a library focusing on Waldensian history. The Henri-Arnaud Church contains Henri Arnaud’s tombstone and a carved altar cross bearing the Waldensian coat of arms. It is the only Protestant church in Württemberg with a French name. The house and church represent different aspects of Waldensian history.
Ötisheim was once a fortified clustered village with distinguished special-purpose buildings of regional importance. The restored Historic Wine Press in the town center includes an event space for up to 150 guests.
Hiking trails with different themes
Ötisheim has well-maintained trails for long walks and bike rides. For a cultural and historical excursion, the Waldensian Trail is a good choice. Along the route are the Sternenschanze, the Chartaque observation tower, the Sauberg vineyards and the Waldensian Museum.
Another route is the ÖT1 circular trail, “In the Footsteps of Ötisheim’s History.” It starts at the parking lot by the L1132 roundabout. Its highlights include the Eppinger Line, the Waldensian Museum in Schönenberg and the Historic Wine Press in Ötisheim.
The trails differ in format: the Waldensian Trail is a cultural and historical route with four named stops along the way; ÖT1 is a circular trail with a specified starting point and three featured destinations. When choosing, you can therefore decide based on the theme or the circular route format.
Getting here and regional setting
Ötisheim has been a stop on the S9 light rail line between Bretten and Mühlacker since 1999. Check the current timetable for your travel date. The L1132 routes through traffic around Ötisheim rather than through the town. These two details serve different purposes: the S9 places Ötisheim on a rail connection between Bretten and Mühlacker, while the L1132 describes the route taken by through traffic.
The Enzkreis district lies in the Northern Black Forest region, in the heart of Baden-Württemberg between the Stuttgart and Karlsruhe metropolitan areas, and surrounds the independent city of Pforzheim. Its northwest belongs to the Kraichgau, where fields, meadows and vineyards shape the landscape. The Stromberg in the Enzkreis district features forested heights, gentle valleys and sunlit vineyards.
