The Heckengäu shapes the landscape around Heimsheim. Hawthorn and blackthorn hedges characterize the scenery in the Heckengäu around Heimsheim; panoramic views and nature-oriented recreation are also part of this landscape. Nature and local history thus represent two distinct aspects of a stay in Heimsheim.

The Heckengäu and Circular Walks

The municipality recommends eight circular walking routes around Heimsheim. Circular Route 1 leads to the Zur schönen Aussicht shelter, which offers views toward the Black Forest. This route combines a named destination with a panorama. The Heimsheim fitness trail has a different focus: outdoor exercise. In choosing what to do, the walking routes and the exercise option appeal to different interests in physical activity.

Local History and Historic Buildings

The town itself has some early historical milestones: Heimsheim received town rights at the beginning of the 14th century and became part of the Duchy of Württemberg in the early 16th century. The Schleglerschloss, known as the Stone House, is not the old Schlegler castle or a reconstruction of it. This distinction is important for understanding its history. The building was erected around 1415 by the Lords of Gemmingen as a residential tower. In 1578, it was converted into a ducal Württemberg granary. After extensive renovation and the addition of a third upper floor, it reopened in 1995. The three dates mark distinct stages: construction, conversion, and reopening.

The Heimsheim Kasten stands at the highest point of the old town and is visible from far away. While the Schleglerschloss is notable for its changing uses, the Kasten’s prominent location is its defining feature in the townscape.

Activities by Request and Open-Air Theater

The historic washhouse and bakehouse on Mönsheimer Straße can be used for baking or drying fruit by arrangement. Confirm availability before your visit. This allows you to plan your stay around an activity in a historic setting that must be requested in advance. The Schleglerschloss is also used as a backdrop for occasional open-air theater performances. Before your visit, check whether a performance is scheduled during your travel dates.

Heimsheim in the Wider Enzkreis District

The Enzkreis district is in the Northern Black Forest region, in the heart of Baden-Württemberg, between the metropolitan areas of Stuttgart and Karlsruhe, and surrounds the district-free city of Pforzheim. The Enzkreis also has a varied landscape: fields, meadows, and vineyards shape the scenery of the Kraichgau in the northwest. The Stromberg has wooded hills, gentle valleys, and sunny vineyards. In the southwest, the Northern Black Forest opens out into dense fir forests, forest meadows, expansive plateaus, and narrow valleys. Heimsheim itself is in the Heckengäu; the landscapes mentioned describe different parts of the wider Enzkreis district. The Enzkreis also includes the Black Forest Central/North and Stromberg-Heuchelberg Nature Parks. Both are intended to be developed and maintained as recreational landscapes, with recreational interests balanced against the protection of nature and the landscape.
