Rayol-Canadel-Sur-Mer brings together beaches, nature and history.

Beaches and underwater life

Plage du Rayol is a cove with two beaches of white sand, crystal-clear water and an unspoiled, protected setting. At Plage du Canadel, Posidonia seagrass meadows cover the seabed and are home to fish. The two beach descriptions emphasize different features: the cove and sand at Rayol, and the seagrass on the seabed at Canadel.

Sentier sous-marin is a guided snorkeling activity in Baie du Figuier that starts at the beach. It is seasonal, so check operating dates before your trip. The route passes through Posidonia seagrass meadows, over sandy seabeds and alongside rocky seabeds. Various marine animals live in these areas, but individual sightings are not guaranteed. This distinguishes the activity from a visit to the beach: the focus here is guided snorkeling through changing underwater habitats.

Experience nature and plan your visits

Domaine du Rayol is a protected natural area owned by Conservatoire du littoral. It includes 13 hectares of maquis and 7 hectares of landscaped areas. This division gives an idea of the different elements of the landscape: the maquis is part of the natural area, alongside the landscaped grounds. Guided tours are offered daily at the Domaine; the seasonal program may vary. If you would like to include a visit in your day’s plans, check the program for your travel dates.

The two guided activities have different scheduling conditions: tours at the Domaine are offered daily, while Sentier sous-marin is seasonal. Your choice therefore depends on whether you want to focus on visiting the natural area or snorkeling—and when you are traveling.

Routes, views and buildings

Escalier monumental leads down from Le Drapeau to the beach via 882 stone steps made of local schist. Along the way are numerous viewpoints and balconies overlooking the Mediterranean and the Îles d’Or. The steps and the views together define the route, so the staircase itself is as much a focus as the scenery.

About halfway along Escalier monumental stands Patec, a round pergola made of reinforced concrete and schist. Original stone slabs are still visible in some places. Voie Verte offers another way to explore the area on foot: the route of the disused railway line has been converted into a greenway. Walkers can discover the coast, rocks and plant life, the Îles d’Or, and some beautiful houses from the early 20th century along the way.

The orientation table at Col du Canadel is another destination along the ridge paths: it can be reached from Le Drapeau via these paths and offers views of the Îles d’Or and the Massif des Maures. The routes offer different points of interest to choose from: the steps and balconies of Escalier monumental, the former railway line of Voie Verte, or the view from Col du Canadel. No walking time or route length is specified here.

Memorials and architectural history

Chapelle Notre Dame du Rosaire au Canadel was built in 1962 on the site of the former Canadel railway station. It commemorates the landing of the African commandos on the night of 14–15 August 1944. Near the chapel is Nécropole, with the graves of 13 French soldiers from the Texier commando who died during the 1944 landings in Provence. The chapel and memorial site are therefore each connected to the events of that landing.

Villa Rayolet offers a different historical perspective. The building was listed as a historic monument in 1994 and is considered a rare example of bourgeois seaside and holiday architecture from the 1940s. Together with the memorial sites and the buildings along the routes, it complements the nature and coastal themes with architectural and local history. If you are looking for a hotel in Rayol-Canadel-Sur-Mer, these different interests can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.
