Sanary-Sur-Mer: Beaches, Harbor and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Sanary-Sur-Mer
Sanary-Sur-Mer brings together several clearly distinct themes for planning your trip: the sandy beach at Portissol, maritime traditions at the Port de Plaisance, and hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels.
Beach and seasonal activities at Portissol
Portissol’s sandy beach is 200 meters long. The beach has a lifeguard station and restroom facilities. Amenities and operating details may vary seasonally; check the conditions for your planned visit before you go.
During the swimming season, the municipality offers an assistance service for beachgoers with disabilities, awarded the Handiplage Level 3 label. This includes access mats reaching down to the sea, the Tiralo2 and Hippocampe beach wheelchairs, a shaded reception area, a changing room and accessible restrooms. The service is available seasonally, making it a specific factor to consider when choosing when to travel.
In July and August, there is also an underwater educational trail at the beach. This offering is specifically available during those two summer months and adds a seasonal activity to a visit to the beach.
Hiking trails with different difficulty levels
The moderately difficult Sentier des Nerthes is 8 kilometers long, with about 300 meters of elevation gain and a walking time of 3.5 to 4 hours. The challenging Sentier du Belvédère is intended for experienced hikers. It covers 13 kilometers, with about 700 meters of elevation gain and a walking time of 5.5 to 6 hours.
Both difficulty level and time commitment matter when comparing the two: the Belvédère is 5 kilometers longer and has around 400 meters more elevation gain. The walking times differ by about two hours. The Nerthes is therefore the shorter, moderately difficult hike, while the Belvédère is a longer and more challenging hike.
The Massif du Gros Cerveau lies above Sanary-Sur-Mer, reaches an altitude of 446 meters and is designated a ZNIEFF area of ecological, faunal and floristic interest. It offers a nature-focused option in addition to the information about the two hiking trails.
Maritime traditions and the history of diving
In the center of Sanary-Sur-Mer, the Port de Plaisance is home to a small flotilla of Provençal pointus boats. Fishermen use these boats for traditional small-scale fishing. The harbor is therefore a maritime focal point distinct from the beach and hiking trails.
The Musée de la plongée Frédéric Dumas displays early equipment for spearfishing and diving that Frédéric Dumas used. The museum also exhibits objects he recovered from ancient shipwrecks in the Mediterranean. The exhibits thus bring together the equipment he used and finds from the Mediterranean’s underwater world.
These options cater to different interests when planning your trip: Portissol’s seasonal beach activities, two hikes with clearly different time commitments and difficulty levels, and maritime themes at the harbor and museum. You can take these highlights into account when choosing a hotel in Sanary-Sur-Mer without combining them into a single excursion itinerary.
